I watched this movie around the time it was first available to stream on HBO Max. I had no idea it was going to go in the direction it was going which I loved that it was surprising. When I finally decided to start video edit again, I started going through some older songs in my spotify playlist and found the song "Ideas" by Au/Ra and I just immediately knew that this was THE song for this movie. I ended up requesting the movie for festivids and was happy that theletterelle requested it as a gift.

The first part that I started working on was the bridge of the song and that was the easiest part out of the entire vid lol. Everything else was more of a challenge. Since the song has some interesting glitch voice/sound effects, it only made sense to show that visually too. At the same time it is very fitting with the theme of the movie to begin with. I use Vegas Pro 14 to edit and I looked up ways to make a glitch effect with the video source which I tested it out and really loved the results. The tutorial was to take a glitch effect stock video and to place over the main video source then add a compositing mode with a custom displacement map. I took it a step forward and experimented with repeating the same clip (one on top of the other), where the one on top has the manipulated effect and the main timeline is the regular video source. That is how I was able to get the weird morphed look in the beginning of the video and in the beginning of the chorus to give the illusion that the world they are living in may or may not be real.

This part below has spoilers if you haven't seen the movie.

I broke this video up into 3 sections while working on it. First section to focus on Alice starting to question and wonder what is off about Jack and Frank. I purposely added where Alice is at the pool and she sees a flashback of her real life, but then it changes to a scene that comes later on towards the end of the video to kind of foreshadow what was coming down the line with Alice/Jack (but also it was to parallel those two scenes together of Jack on top of Alice ). In the movie, they use weird visuals during this scene that was used for Alice's programming, but I felt like I wanted to focus more on flashbacks and "hallucinations". Ok, so for the Second section was to focus on Margaret and how that opens the door that leads Alice to start questioning everything and how her mk ultra mind starts breaking down even more; She has a strong desire to find answers. Third section when everything starts to make more sense with Alice remembering everything and the real life she had that was stripped away from her without her consent or knowledge from Jack.

I made sure to conclude Frank's part in this video, but I am still sad I could not continue on with the character Bunny because she did play an important role. The thing is that I could just not squeeze her in for the rest of the video & it making sense at the same time for those who haven't seen this movie. I actually felt like I had way too many clips from the movie to work with and found it challenging to fit it all in this video. I even had to rework a couple places in the video to remove things that visually looked great, but it seemed random in certain spots and wasn't adding anything to the message of this video. Oh to be a vidder, the dilemma.

One of the things I noticed is that there is a strong theme of "Suffocation" in this movie. I believe the actual first act of it was when Jack knocked out Alice to hook her up to the virtual world (which all we see in the movie is a clip of Alice being dragged from the floor). Honestly it seems the suffocating started even before that in their real life as Alice and Jack's relationship was already going downhill. Since Alice was already feeling suffocated in her relationship with Jack it translates even more when she's in the virtual world with scenes of her drowning, the wall closing in on her to where she can't breathe and her attempting to randomly suffocate her own-self. Then we see at the end, Jack really tries to suffocate her physically to death which further proves He had already been doing that to begin with.
