Summary
Claude has many secrets. Byleth comes face to face with his biggest secret when Claude abruptly turns into a dragon and is unable to change back. Oops.
Claude is stuck. Never mind the fact that he hasn't shifted forms since he was ten years old! He doesn't even know what creature he is, let alone how to control it. As far as he was aware, his whole 'transforming into a wyvern-snake-thing' curse had been broken years ago. Now he's stuck as a tiny scaly noodle under Teach's care. Not only is his secret in their hands, but so is his life. Until he can figure out how to get his body back to normal, he's fully dependent on Teach so his cold-blooded body won't freeze to death.
Sure, Byleth is confused about their favorite student's new shape, but it's not the weirdest thing they've seen. No weirder than crests, reversing time, or the ghost-girl living in their head. They know how to roll with the punches. Even if that punch is a scaly dragon baby. Sothis is delighted by the chance to dote on any baby dragon, even if that baby dragon is Claude. It would be nice if baby dragons came with a manual, though. Can't be any harder than teaching, right?

By Fódlan's calendar, it's Imperial Year 1253, though it's been nearly seventy years since Claude left the country. The Officers Academy, the years of war, the friends and hopes and dreams he buried... all those things are a thousand miles and a lifetime away. Claude has barely even thought of them in half a century.
Then an unexpected guest arrives at his humble Almyran estate, and it's like she's walked straight out of his memory and onto his doorstep. The United Kingdom of Fódlan was left stunned and grieving when their queen disappeared a few years ago, but she’s alive—and while time has weathered Claude’s body and withered his senses, she doesn't seem a day older than when he last saw her, back when he was still a brash young man whose world had yet to be changed forever.
He could tell her to leave. He could say the word and have her back in Fódlan or sitting in an Almyran dungeon before the week is out. But there’s serenity in no longer being the last of a dying breed. Claude could use some company in the quiet and lonely days of his retirement, and seeing a familiar face after all this time might do Teach some good, too.

“Have you ever thought about publishing your research?” Claude asks, in a tone Linhardt has long since categorized as the overly casual type that means he's hiding something which makes him genuinely nervous.
It's not his favorite tone. In fact, he'd probably put it in his top ten least favorite tones of Claude's voice, if he were pressed to make a list. Still, he understands it. Sometimes Claude requires a level of finesse that Linhardt has never been good at and generally likes even less, but he's made his peace with liking Claude more than he hates making an effort to change.
It's why he bothers to play along, instead of pointing out that Claude knows him more than well enough to be fully aware of the answer.

Dimitri is on the throne, Seteth is acting archbishop, and although all isn’t perfect in the newly united Fodlán, all is moving in the right direction. Byleth had played her role in the long war. Reuniting with an old friend in a new land brings back old memories, and new feelings, as they inevitably grow closer.
