They both moved away from each other defensively. Vax tried to reach for one of his daggers without alerting the girl, but then he realized they weren't where they should have been, on his belt. He assumed they had fallen into the sea. He cursed silently. It would be complicated to find new daggers, at least of the same quality. He would probably have to visit Gilmore. They remained silent, both cautious. She moved away from him in confusion, as if she didn't understand what was happening. He didn't know if this woman was a threat. He was confident he could beat her in hand-to-hand combat, but without his daggers, he wasn't sure of his advantage, and—was that a tail?
