Gaoshun does not notice it at first — not between the inspection reports still damp with wax-seals, the rhythmic clang of squadron drills echoing across the upper court, or the senior handler loudly complaining about the price of polished tack-leather. But when the wind shifts, he looks up.
Mùjūn—his massive, grizzled Bronze—has lifted his head from where it had been resting against sun-warmed stone, nostrils twitching like a hound catching a scent.
He does not speak.
No commentary. No sarcasm. Not even a huff of smoke.
That is the first sign.

The dragon's hide was a rich brown, flecked with gold, like the sands near the oasis of Erestor's birth. Meneldor did not like being out of the rolling dunes of their homeland but the star-touched had spoken to the elders of their tribe and to the north and west they were sent, for a great darkness was said to have arrived on the shores of their lands, a darkness their people had known but once before, in the depth of their pasts that only the eldest of them remembered.

Summary
It was really hard to write a summary for this without spoiling the main plot, so by definition it had to be very generic. I hope that doesn't spoil anyone's enjoyment of it. This is an AU set within the world of Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragonriders of Pern.' It takes place at the end of the 9th Pass. Dean witnesses his parents being killed and is driven from his home with his baby brother. Rescued by a Queenrider and reared in a newly established weyr, both brothers are destined to become dragonriders themselves. A prophecy from ancient times hangs over them, and a new and vicious enemy is unmasked as the two brothers fight to make sense of the old verse. To complicate matters further, did Dean really have to impress THAT dragon?
MidnightSilver, (aka TheGreenestGreenToEverGreen,) claimed the story and produced the illustrations that make my heart skip a beat each time I look at them, because they are so gorgeous. Go and shower them with the love they deserve. You'll find their art post here:
