“I’ve been bringing my flock over these hills for years,” Steve offers. “It’s nice, this close to Hallow’s Eve, around here. The apples,” he gestures towards the stranger with one of them, and takes a big bite. “The leaves changing color,” he says, spitting bits of apple inelegantly into the fire. They pop and sizzle when they hit the flames, briefly filling the air with a spiced, earthy smell.
“This close?” The stranger looks at him, eyebrows raised. He’s got such an expressive face, Steve almost wants to seize him by the cheeks and see how he can stretch it, press it, what shapes it might make in his hands. “How close?”
“To Hallow’s Eve?” Steve loses track of days out here, so he has to retrace the last few sunsets, how many of them have passed since he last waved goodbye to Robin as he brought out the flock. “I don’t know… a week? Little less?”
“That soon,” the man says quietly. Stares into the fire, expressive face gone still. “Almost out of time.”

A hand takes Lan Wangji’s, wraps around his wrist to bring him to his feet. Instead of recoiling. They meet, pulled together, and Lan Wangji follows, lifting his eyes. White skin and black robes, gray bone and gray smoke and silver eyes. A red ribbon and redder smile. Blinding like fire, like the sun.
Lan Wangji should be terrified of the demon in front of him, repulsed by the patchwork of corpse and ghost, but instead he is drawn towards it, towards life and warmth, entirely prepared to burn if he gets too close to the sunlight before him.
“You ruined my turnips. What am I going to eat now?” the wraith asks, a lilting tease to his voice that rings like a bell. He rushes forward, long nail-tipped fingers curling into claws. Smile widening into menacing playful hunger. “Perhaps I should steal your golden core and feast on you instead?”
The being bursts into laughter, eyes closing as he smiles. “You’re very cute when you’re confused.” He opens his eyes to steal the breath from Lan Wangji, who can feel his ears heat from the words and the spirit’s proximity.
(Or: Tam Lin but make it Wangxian. Where Wei Wuxian is a ghost story to scare children, and Lan Wangji still falls hard for him.)

Buffy’s wandering feet draw her, trancelike, out to the overgrown garden at the edge of the property, where the rose hedges have grown into a dense and unruly tangle. She hears a rustling in the bushes, but pays it no mind as she reaches to pull a perfumed blossom towards her face.
“Don’t,” a voice cracks out: a harsh low growl of a command.
She turns toward the man who’d spoken, an impossible recognition tingling through her nerves even before she catches sight of him.
It strikes her, then, that the rose garden is said to be the most haunted part of the estate, and it seems there’s truth to the rumors, for surely she’s seeing a ghost. Angel’s been dead, ashes in the wind, for going on a year now.
Scotland, 2005. Buffy’s running a Slayer training program out of a castle said to be haunted. There’s been no word of Angel and his allies since Wolfram & Hart’s collapse. But maybe their story’s not so over as it seems….

'“You-You’re the spirit of these woods, correct?” Yolanda Briar, Princess of Neilsberg asked of the being before her, a shadow brought to life and marked by ever changing stars, a pocket of smoke and night folded into the shape of a man.
“That I am,” the spirit confirmed, and Yor started at just how…human his voice was, low and pleasing to her ear. His eyes were human too, cerulean discs that hung within the shadow of his face like twin moons. She thought them to be very pretty, even as they regarded her with a naked interest, “And you are Yolanda Briar, the Princess of this land?”
“That I am,” she echoed, “B-but my family usually just calls me Yor,” she said, perhaps too candidly in the face of a fae, “If I may ask, h-how do you know that?”
“I hear whispers,” the spirit answered, stepping closer to her, “-Rumours upon the tongues of those who travel through these woods. The most beautiful woman in the realm, with eyes like rubies and hair like spun night. They also call you the Princess of Thorns, saying you’ve rejected every proposal for your hand thus far, and have in fact assaulted several suitors when they pressed their claims.”
Yor’s face burned, knowing the spirit spoke truth.
“An intriguing claim, to be sure, though rumour often proves more potent than fact,”'
