Bdubs looked upwards and took as deep a breath as he possibly could of that college town air— fresh and full of hope and despair and sweat and weed and sex and alcohol and desperation and misguided faith and clumsy independence and freedom. He imagined that he was filling every possible crevice in his lungs until they ached, like those videos of people shooting alcohol ink into resin to make the free association of flowers, and then added a little air more. He held it for a second, digging his teeth into his lip, before breathing out through his mouth, pretending he was a dragon exhaling fire.
Cleo tapped the side of his boot with her knuckle. "Whatcha doin' up there, bud?"
"Saying hi to the stars," he responded easily.

He could only take so much of this feeling. Every turn of his head, every bob of his chin, every small motion was punctuated with knotted strands of his pale blonde hair brushing his skin. It had gotten so bad that it now hung down to his chin, a gnarled mess that he couldn’t escape. Even his treasured bandana couldn’t keep it out of his face.
There was a time and place for his sensory issues, and a death game wasn’t it.

The position felt like a futile shield against the world, a small fortress that, for a moment, made him feel a semblance of safety amid the chaos. But it was only a temporary release, and even that small comfort felt fragile under the weight of everything that had been bottled up inside him.
