I hate I have to see my father each time I unwillingly return here. Hades hates me. Nyx tries to help me. My mother…where’s she, now?
Where’s…my will? Why do I, in first place, want to escape my home? Because I thought I hate it here…
Hypnos mocks me, when he sees me returning here. And his brother…
…his brother saw me once too. Covered in blood; the sweet blood of the pool in which I appear each time I die. Thanatos. He saw me covered by death. He smelled death on me. Since our first encounter, he can’t leave me alone. He seems eager to see me surrounded by death again and again. Sweet boy.
And I, Thanatos, can’t be more impatient to be fully dominated by it.”

Where Zagreus starts a journal and Thanatos casually finds it, one night. Where two deranged gods crave death and something a little more appealing.

A problem of sorts, when the Underworld Prince wants nothing more than to escape, even if it means abandoning everything and everyone else, including Thanatos. While Thanatos has to realize, perhaps letting go of Zagreus, is the only way he will grow into the god that he needs to be.

Thanzag Week 2025 Day One: Kissing
In which the first Elysium encounter between Thanatos and Zagreus takes an unexpected turn.
'As it turns out, to Zagreus death is nothing but a stutter: no more than a second later, his heart picks up its rhythm and the arrow is forced from his body as Thanatos watches. How horrible, the way his skin seals itself back together under his eyes. How shocking, the way his soul would deny Thanatos right before his eyes, would deny fate itself.
How beautiful.
Thanatos stares down, and they are so close, too close. Enough to see the gentle freckles on Zag's cheeks, enough that the flaming leaves of his laurels flutter free and threaten to burn him—but what do the laurels have on the electric heat of Zagreus' skin as he comes to life in Than's hands? What power could Death hold against the soft part of his lips as he steals the air back into his lungs, steals the blood back into his veins?
Show him what will happen if he tries to escape death.'

The weapon shudders in Thanatos’s hand, anticipating death. “You must hate me,” he whispers, “to keep doing this to me. To keep making me do this.”
Zagreus is still, and Thanatos finds himself leaning in, chasing the warmth. He hesitates. His scythe shakes in his hand again. Impatient.
“I don’t hate you,” Zagreus says, his voice and his face even, determined. “But I will break you.”
Thanatos as the Asphodel boss AU. It’s snowing on the surface, the Phlegethon burns, and Zagreus’s infernal heat slowly melts through Thanatos’s icy resolve.

He had a ledger that reminded him of all the ways Zagreus had died before, and he had a prodigiously good imagination. That was all he really needed. It gave him answer enough.
He felt the way Zagreus’s mind shifted and swayed towards unconsciousness as his fight went on and he must have sustained more injuries, seeking desperate shelter from pain. The mind always shied from its own suffering — when agony was too sharp, too much, it reached desperately for that solace that Hypnos held at his command. It yearned for unconsciousness. So whenever something hurt Zagreus enough for his mind to start reaching for the oblivion of Sleep, desperate to faint rather than endure some acute torment, Hypnos felt it.
And then he always felt Zagreus struggling to master his own mind. Trying — just through sheer force of will — to pull away. To stay conscious. To stagger on.
And Hypnos had to decide what to do.

Achilles had described Thanatos as a “gentle death.” Zagreus had always thought that just meant “gentler than the alternative,” but he could see it now. Maybe mortals wouldn’t fear death as much if they knew the reaper awaiting them wasn’t as “grim” as he seemed.

Not only his life is on the line if he becomes an agent of change - if he continues fighting he risks the fates of all those he loves.

When Zagreus finally defeats his father to escape the underworld, instead of finding his mother in a hidden-away cottage, he finds an exiled witch on her island. When Circe is banished to Aiaíā, she was prepared for loneliness and isolation, not the kind gaze of the prince of the underworld.
Basically, I just want Circe to be loved, and Zagreus is literally perfect for her. I have an actual plot brewing, so stayed tuned.
