Summary
Every night for the last 22 years, Mercer Frey has been haunted by the same nightmare of a dark-haired woman, a cursed tomb, and a murder of crows. Brynjolf has been barely holding the crumbling guild together as its members are slowly picked off one by one through a series of arrests, executions, and accidents. When an exhausted, staving, and half-dead stranger stumbles into the streets of Riften, she finds herself caught up in a decades-long curse that somehow has much more to do with her than anyone could have realized.

She's not exactly open about her past, but knowing someone's past has never really been important to Brynjolf in the chase of pleasure. With every mission she completes for the Guild, he can tell the others' opinions of her are changing, not that they'd tell her. And for Brynjolf? Well, she's not being subtle with her quips--not that he is either. A few flirtatious comments here, a few suggestive comments there, and he's realizing that he wants to know her past, which scares him. Maybe she'll tell him, maybe she won't. It all depends on how deep he's willing to dive for her, and she the same for him. But that curse that is supposedly running the Guild into the ground is about to rear its head and they might not have time for that dinner after all.

Arianon Blackbriar is the adopted child of Maven. Her father Gwihir Duskhollow sells her to the Blackbriars when she is 12 to try and pay off his debts to the family. He can't afford to take care of a daughter and give Maven her money at the same time. Besides, what does a thief need with a kid? Ari works the meadery during the day and does whatever else her family orders her to do at home. Eventually, when Ari is 26, Indaryn sends her out to deliver a case of mead to Ivarstead. But Along the road she is ambushed by vampires who take her to their den to use as cattle. When Maven finds out what happens she nearly kills Indaryn and hires the companions to find her adopted daughter. Kodlak sends Athis and Farkas to find the girl and when she wakes up in Whiterun Arianon pleads with them not to bring her back home. When she explains her situation to Kodlak he agrees to help her, and Ari joins the companions. Obviously Maven doesn't like losing her chore girl, so she sends emissaries from the Thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood after Arianon.
