Anton Sokolov, who had sensed the change in the world after the fall of the Outsider, took up his old practice of conducting strange rituals once more.
/
He practiced on rats first. /The first to finally bear any fruit/could barely be considered alive. It breathed and blinked and bled, yes, but it seemed to be unaware of its own existence, lying on its side at all times and not reacting to stimuli at all. It didn’t even eat the food Sokolov placed in front of it, didn’t so much as sniff at it.The next rat was an improvement of sorts. It was… Well, it was certainly much more alive than the previous one had been. The only problem was that it was a violent little thing, all rage and fear, relentlessly attacking anything that moved and trying very hard to eat Sokolov alive. He’d had to put it down just like the rat before it.
But after that success, if it could be called that, he got closer and closer to reaching his goal with every rat he reanimated with his strange rituals. Each time, he modified the incantation he chanted, carved a new rune with slightly different sigils, shaped his thoughts and intentions into something more light-hearted (hard as that was when he’d seen so much cruelty in his life, and done so much harm with the hands he now used to carefully wave the Void stone knife around with).
And at last, he managed to succeed once, twice, three times, reanimating rats that were no different in their “new life” than they’d been in their previous one.
It was time to try the ritual on Jindosh.
/So many had failed Jindosh throughout his life/ there were no more experiments he could do - ethically, at least, which was something that mattered to him those days - and no more artifacts to collect. Sokolov placed Jindosh’s corpse in the center of his ritual circle, and the Clockwork Soldier head, along with the jar containing the man’s severed fingers, was situated atop the altar. Whale oil burned in the two lamps set at either side of the marble slab, casting the otherwise dark room in an eerie purplish light, and the Void stone knife held in Anton’s hand glinted a silvery indigo, reflecting the lamp’s glow.He focused his intentions and channeled his thoughts into the most light-hearted ones he could manage, thinking not of the killing machines Kirin had created, but of the silvergraph machines, the improvements he’d made to his former professor’s audiograph design, the machine he’d crafted that ran on whale oil and brought those who listened to its beautiful songs to tears. He chanted incantations similar to the ones he’d practiced and waved the ritual knife in careful, fluid patterns.
Whalesong rang out in Sokolov’s ears/
“Kirin Jindosh,” Anton called out suddenly, surprising himself. “I call upon your spirit in the Void. Return to me, my boy! There is work to be done yet, inventions to be made, discussions to be had. Follow the whalesong, Kirin. Let it guide you back to your body- let yourself be restored. It is not too late for you.”/There was skin - no longer pale and blackening but warm-toned and tan - covering his ribcage, which had previously been exposed. His face was full again, as opposed to gaunt and sunken in, and the flesh of his hands was no longer slipping off. The only thing that hadn’t been restored to its original condition, it appeared, was Jindosh’s clothing, which had been eaten away at during his time spent as a decomposing corpse instead of the living, breathing, very much alive man he now was.
Alive and extremely confused.
Kirin was slowly sitting up, blinking hard like one might after sleeping for enough time to make them bleary-eyed and groaning and cursing in Serkonan quite loudly.
“What in the name of the Void has happened? Where am I? Who-” Jindosh cut himself off suddenly when his eyes focused on his former professor.Ah, so it seemed his mind had been restored, after all, though how exactly that had occurred, Sokolov didn’t know. He didn’t really care, either, truth be told. That was something he - they, maybe - could investigate later, if they so fancied it.
For now, they had much to discuss.
Anton smiled down at his former student and offered him a hand.
“Why don’t I tell you about everything you missed over a glass of whiskey?”

He felt twisted sick, the air refused to stay in his lungs and his throat burned fiercely. He couldn't speak when for so long all he had were his words. He couldn't feel aside from cold familiarity that had been his life for so ages...and his name—he knew it, it was there in the tip of his tongue, on the edge of his thoughts, and yet it was gone again. Taken from him. Stolen, yet not. The Void churned within him, but it was broken. He hadn't felt like this in two years. He hadn't—this was all wrong. The Outsider was dead; he wasn't the Outsider anymore. Wasn't he?
Billie Lurk wakes up on her bed in the old Commerce Building ten days before her exile from the Whalers. She has a void eye and a void arm that only she can see, memories of events that haven't happened, powers she can't explain, and a connection to a boy who had once been an Eldritch whale deity whose name she knew but cannot speak, cannot think. Something had gone horribly wrong and the path of destiny irrevocably changed.
