A fanfic based on the show Arcane with inspiration from the Victorian era, which historically was also the prime of cowboys. It follows Vi and Caitlyn in a more complicated relationship, their statuses and social standards making their bond struggle, the string that ties them together holding on to both of them for dear life. It's my very first time being on Ao3 or even writing and posting it on the internet, on top of that I'm not a native speaker of English so I apologize for any mistakes, and if people point them out to me I will fix them. “Sure,” she said, leaning back like the desk was a throne. “So, basically, Hamlet’s thinkin’ about whether it's better to die, or to keep living with all the crap life keeps dumping on him. Like, what's worse? Dealin’ with pain and betrayal and all that family mess, or just… poof. Peace out.”
Someone in the front row laughed, unsure if they were allowed to.
Ms. Heimerdinger didn’t interrupt.
Vi twirled the pencil again. “He’s not just bein’ dramatic, though. It’s not like he wants to die. He’s scared. Scared of what comes after. He says somethin’ about the undiscovered country, right? That’s the line. It’s not death he’s afraid of, it’s the not knowing.”
Now the room was dead quiet.
Vi tapped the pencil against her desk, soft. Rhythmic.
“He’s stuck. ‘Cause living hurts, but dying… might hurt worse. So he just… stays where he is. Frozen. Thinkin’. Thinkin’ too much. And it screws him up.”
Silence stretched. Even the overhead lights buzzed a little quieter.

Vi helps her back to the Upper City, and although she makes it clear that she doesn't think much of the Pilties, as she calls Caitlyn and all surface-level people, young Caitlyn does everything she can to see her again.
Eventually, a tender bond of friendship forms between them, and Vi shows the naive Caitlyn that the Undercity is very different from what she was taught on the Surface from an early age.
But when a tragedy occurs that separates them, Caitlyn decides to join the Enforcers and change things for the better in the Undercity.

After mentioning that she wants to be an Enforcer over dinner, Caitlyn is transferred from the Junior Academy to Zaun's only school to discourage her from choosing that path. During her first day, a girl named Vi begrudgingly helps Caitlyn and allows her to sit with her and her siblings, and Caitlyn develops an interest in being their friend (and... maybe (definitely) also develops a tiny (massive) crush on Vi). Despite their reservations, they accept her into their little group, and she fights to be a full part of the crew, through both high school and heists.
(Basically, Vi, Mylo, Claggor, Powder, and Caitlyn at the age they were in S1: Act 1 in high school in Zaun, featuring Caitlyn and Vi having an adorable teenage romance, Vander's kids trying to make Caitlyn into an anti-establishment delinquent (it mostly works), Vander ending up with another kid constantly hanging out in his basement, and the six of them (including Ekko) being chaotic teenagers/kids trying to find their way among a steampunk borderline-dystopia, high school, and their constant shenanigans that happen as a result of them all being chaotic little gremlins plus terminal illness and class war.)
