Professor Basil was madly in love with Detective Ratigan.
And it wasn’t like he didn’t think they’d be a great couple together; he just didn’t want to get in the way of Ratigan’s career when he knew how much it meant to him. Besides, who’s to say that Ratigan even felt the same way? Basil also didn’t want to complicate things just in case his feelings for the detective were to put him in danger; he would never forgive himself if that happened.
