That’s the damned question. That’s the damned question he’s been trying to avoid, and by the way Matsukawa looks at him, he knows it.
Oikawa shuts his eyes. “Mattsun.”
“Who is our ace, Oikawa?”
“Mattsun.”
“Matsu, hey, lay off-”
“Makki is, Mattsun, who else?”
He chokes on the words. It feels like a betrayal. Even to Oikawa himself it sounds like a lie. He doesn’t open his eyes, doesn’t see Matsukawa’s expression, but he can imagine it just as well.
“You don’t believe that, Oikawa.”
Oikawa exhales, shakily, before walking again - this time, at a faster pace, intentionally leaving the other two behind. One of them tries to follow him - the other holds him back.
Matsukawa is right, after all. Oikawa doesn’t believe himself either.
OR: Iwaizumi Hajime is dead. Of course, Oikawa Tooru hasn't really admitted that to himself yet.
OR OR: Aoba Johsai loses their ace after Inter-High, and they scramble to pick up the pieces.

Maybe it was going to his own dad's funeral and having to play the role he had been born to that made Henry adopt the bland mask, the persona in his dossier, more fully. All the world's a stage, after all, when the eyes of the public are on you even at your own father's funeral.
