It was a well-known fact that Jonathan wasn’t the biggest fan of Steve Harrington, but it irked Jonathan just how liked the guy was. Everyone either liked him or tolerated him, and Jonathan was the only person who actively tried to stay away from him—with the exception of Mike, who still rolled his eyes whenever his sister’s ex-boyfriend was involved.
Speaking of Nancy, she isn’t the reason that Jonathan doesn’t like Steve. Jonathan would be blind if he couldn’t see the tension between the two, it’s been an ongoing thing ever since Jonathan came back from California. He bites his tongue every time he overhears Robin and Dustin tease Steve about his all-too-obvious crush on Nancy, and egg him on to win her over. He notices Nancy’s subtle defenses of Steve—he’d be stupid not to.
But Jonathan trusts Nancy. It’s as simple as that. They had recently overcome the tense barrier in their relationship that had built because of distance, and Jonathan realized just how much faith he just has in Nancy.

A Will and Jonathan introspection from season 1.
Everything hurts when Will wakes up. His fingers feel like they’re going to fall off, and his body is one big aching mess. Vines press indents into his arms despite his sleeves, telling him he’s been there too long. That it’s going to catch up, and he can’t have that happen. If he does, he’ll never get home. But it’s so cold. Almost too cold to move, and his skin is white as a sheet when he looks down at his shaking hands. But still he pushes himself up.
He teeters, unsteady and barely able to stand. Fear floods his veins at the idea of not being able to run, not being able to find another hiding place. Then he hears it, growling. It’s distant, but unmistakably the Demogorgon. And then Will’s running again, and everything starts to blur together. He grew up in this town, and he knows it inside and out. It’s not hard for him to remember his way around, but every hour he spends here, he gets slower and it gets harder to get away. And that thing never stops.

“So what’s the plan?” Dustin asks.
Jonathan recognizes the intensity from his time watching the boys play DnD.
“El has to get stronger,” Mike says. “We have an idea on how to do that without One figuring out, we just don’t have all of the details figured out.”
“We have to be prepared for something to come through to try and distract us,” Will adds. “Vecna’s out there. He’s hurt, but he won’t go down without a fight.”
“What’s the idea for getting stronger?” Robin asks. “Like, do we have a solid plan that just needs some minor adjustments or are we basically going off of twelve percent of a plan?”
“More like fifty percent,” El clarifies. “We need to go back to the lab and look for documents that Papa hid. If we find those, they should tell us the fastest way for me to get stronger.”
“So El gets strong enough to defeat Vecna and then the final showdown?” Steve asks. “She beats him and everything’s over?”
Will nods, “That’s the hope, at least.”
“When everything’s settled, we’ll go back to normal,” Mike says.
Or, after the events of the season four finale, everyone's getting ready to continue the fight with Vecna.
