Rather than killing the child, the Southern Raiders ensure she is shipped to the Fire Nation palace dungeon, far from snow and moonlight.Three weeks later, a clever, ambitious royal with a habit of sneaking around grandfather’s palace overhears that the last Southern Waterbender has been brought to her permanent cell. She sneaks into the dungeon at night, attempting to see the prisoner for herself. Yet, instead of finding an embittered warrior, all Princess Azula sees is a girl her age, scared and alone.
Her perspective on the Hundred-Year War is fundamentally changed forever.

"Zuzu, did you finally master lightning?"
His response is a strangled gasp, and she sighs before stalking forward to assess the scene properly. Their father is on the ground, and Zuko, dressed in clothes not at all befitting of a prince, is curled up on himself.
"No," Zuko rasps. "I—he tried to kill me."
"And you're surprised?"
Zuko lets out a wet laugh. "I shouldn't be, should I?"
"Hm," is Azula's only response. Zuzu has always been frighteningly naïve.
"You must think I'm stupid."
While she would normally say, Of course I do, it doesn't feel quite right for the current circumstances. Instead, she says levelly, "You've never been able to think before acting."
When he doesn't respond, she sighs. "So? What was your plan?"
or: When Ozai tries to kill Zuko after the eclipse, he redirects the lightning back at him. Azula cares about four people, and one of them just tried to kill another. Now she has to pick up the pieces.

Or, Zuko, also known as Spirit, is the son of the Fire Lord, one of the worlds most feared villains, was supposed to be meeting at the rendezvous with his father and sister, not be buried under a collapsed building about to be kidnapped by a blind superhero, who is also a child.

Or, or, or, I'm dressing up as a superhero for Halloween, that is my justification for doing this for whumptober (it will also be very whumpy).

Specific focus on trauma, guilt, and PTSD; on the moral gray area that war creates and the inevitability of having to do the hard thing over the right thing. Early chapters set the framework, but later chapters are some of my best writing.
Sprawling, long-form character study (mainly 3rd person, with 1st person flashbacks).

The words taste like ash. They sound like him. I force myself to meet their eyes so they know I mean it. “This will be a harem in appearance only. I am far too-”
And then I see her. The words die.
Her gown is the colour of pine, patterned in threads of gold. It clings, then falls, loose trousers underneath. A jade pin glints in her black hair. My mouth goes dry. Jin.
The girl I remember as sweet and soft and has been carved into something sharp. Her cheekbones hollower; her jaw an elegant line. Her eyes, distrusting and yet familiar and dark green, catch mine and widen. Surprise flickers across her face, turning to recognition, then something else. Her lips part.
And I almost imagine the whisper of a name I hadn't heard in years. 'Lee?' -

The last time Zuko felt this kind of sickness, Ozai hadn't been happy and Zuko had felt the consequences of it for several days after. Zuko swore from then on that he wouldn't become sick like that ever again, or at the very least, he'd push himself to overcome it, even at his own detriment.
