Mafuyu pushed a few aside so that he could examine them one by one. The lines over the sheets had been scribbled together, markings over markings, edits and adjustments, and in the background were faint lines that had been harshly erased - far gentler strokes pencilled over the top with care.
Theory met reality on those pages. In theory the lines on the pages should be ordered — ordered in the sense that they should give direction to a piece of music, the neat set of instructions necessary to do the job well.
But… in reality…
Life isn’t neat or orderly, Mafuyu knows that better than anyone. And yet throughout the chaos there are a few things: routines and rituals, that Mafuyu can come to trust and depend on. Things that will never change.

No one wants a disabled guitarist anyway, according to a mountain of ableism that had built over the years of psychological torture. But, on one fateful day, at an orchestra that Akihiko invites the band to, Mafuyu realises that his mind may not be a malfunctioned mess, especially not when Uenoyama begins to have a sensory overload during the concert.

Uenoyama lowers his head a little. “You—” It comes out almost between his teeth, like he’s gritting it out. “You’re really sticking with Kaji-san lately.”
Is that bad? Does that mean he is angry? Does that mean Mafuyu made him angry?
“That’s—”
Uenoyama whirls around, lodging Mafuyu’s words in his throat. He flinches by accident, just because Uenoyama is so close, and Mafuyu expects there to be a hand, next, coming just as fast.
He wishes the antidepressants were working, because he’s feeling the wrong things, right now. He’s feeling scared.
He’s not supposed to be scared around Uenoyama. He’s not supposed to be scared of Uenoyama.
“You really think I wouldn’t be angry?” Uenoyama demands. His eyes narrow, unfriendly and accusatory.

He shouldn't have been. God forbid he ever stops feeling sorry at himself for being selfish that day.
