No—he’s seen what it did to his best friend, Thomas Greenie. How Thomas had shut down and hasn’t spoken to either him nor Minho since being reaped himself two years ago and returning as the crowned victor. How Thomas is now nothing but a WICKED mutt, working on the same arenas he himself had fought to death in. He can’t let Lizzy go through that. He can’t let her go through all that alone. He can’t let her die.
And so Newt makes his decision. Teresa hadn’t even begun to pick out the district male’s name before:
“I volunteer as tribute!”
Or, when Newt’s 12 year old sister's name is drawn at the Reaping, Newt volunteers as the male tribute so that he can protect her through the Games and ensure she gets home, no matter what the cost. Even if it means reconnecting with his former best friend who's now his mentor and may or may not have a small crush on him that Newt is completely oblivious to. -

The memory of that bat coming down on his best friend's leg. The memory of two grown men grabbing his beaten, thrashing body, dragging him off and away, giving Thomas no time to look at his face for what very well could have been the last time.
The face that sent butterflies swarming through Thomas's stomach and spewing from his lips, into the world around him like a forbidden song. He'd run for the hills to catch them, and when he did, he'd hide them away in a rusted tin can. Yes, he'd hide them. But then a miracle happened. A small cluster of the missing children, kids who had disappeared all around the states and beyond, were recovered in the deserted sands of a desert near the border of Mexico. They remembered nothing but war and the remains of a world shattered by catastrophe, but they were alive, and there was hope.
What follows are the police reports written at the recovery of the children by Beacon Hills Police Station, recorded by one Sheriff N. Stilinski.
