Her pink scissors are placed haphazardly on the counter and she notices his hair looks shorter in some places, she’s never seen the outfit he’s wearing either. He looks different and it’s a harsh reminder of all the places she should’ve been better. He’s tall and sort of smaller than she remembered too and she wondered if maybe it was all just a mistake. Maybe he was taking a bath or rinsing his hair to dye it and the blow dryer fell in and malfunctioned, turning itself on. Maybe he had just forgotten to take off his clothes when he was climbing into the bath entirely. Her knuckles were red and white when she looked down, they had been for a while actually she just didn’t care. She wishes he had someone to talk to. She wishes there was just one person out of eight billion for her little brother, because there must have been at least one. Maybe she would be some random girl he bumped into in a grocery store or maybe a tall silver-eyed boy. She didn’t know and she didn’t care who it ended up being, she just wished Akito had met somebody he could have to himself faster. Maybe it should have been her, his big sister.

He had dreams of this happening, but not like this, not at all. It’d be him and Toya, and he’d try to do something confident only for Toya to take over. A fantasy, really, one that made Akito feel guilty every time it popped back into his stupid head.
There’s no way people would believe that this random professional looking man had picked a fight with the rebellious street musician. What else could he say, ‘he was being creepy’? People hardly take it seriously when it happens to women, the social stigma is insane, and never mind a boy like Akito. Nobody would believe him, and if they did, they’d make fun of him instead.
(Akito gets assaulted in the bathrooms at a convention center. Through all of the hurt, at least he can count on Toya to pick up the broken pieces.)

Sometimes, every now and then, on sleepless nights, Akito likes to remember. He likes to remember all the times they were touching, bodies pressed together in the rain under a sole umbrella, hands interlocked, with his arm around his shoulders, lips pressed together. All the times that Akito would melt into a puddle of self-hatred and Toya would present to him everything he would never change about him (which was everything) and all the times Akito would wake up in the middle of the night to his partner silently shaking with distant, clouded eyes and take it upon himself to nurse him back to reality.
He realized in a cloud of melancholy that the worst part about seeing his partner again was that he wasn’t his partner anymore. -
