Not so long ago, not so far behind that it can disappear into the distance. Close enough that it scrapes against bone if he breathes in too deep; if his heart beats just a little too fast. Or, if it doesn’t beat at all.
Seizing, pausing, stopping dead. A cold lump between his lungs, full of tar. Watching Roy’s face shift, watching him smile without it ever reaching his eyes. The way they crinkle is forced and mechanical, like he’s trying to convince the observer that all is well.

Gone are the bruises. The indigo, the navy blue and dark cerulean. The little hint of violet and fuchsia, faded long ago. A wound you don’t even remember making. A wound which, logically, must have drawn blood.
Sinking your teeth into him so many times it eventually became automatic; mundane, not even worth committing to memory.
A reflex. A knee-jerk response. Something you did because it is instinct. Something you did because it is simply the kind of animal you are.
Were. Trying not to be. Trying to shed that particular skin and become something new. Not necessarily better, but toothless. Defanged, declawed. Well trained and tame; a lion’s maw he could place his head in knowing the jaws would not snap shut.
