It's already late, later than he should be out on a weeknight, but the theme of the show was a super hero revue and there was no way he was gonna miss that. It's loud in the venue, which is the back space of what probably used to be a warehouse right near the Gowanus Canal, and Sam's already had a few. He's up at the bar during the break, watching the act. He doesn't hear someone say, "Behind!" so when he steps away from the bar, he smashes right into the guy who'd just done the Captain America routine up on stage, and knocks his drinks to the ground.

Ok I remember this fic, I remember loving the premise, loving the slight-AU versions of the characters, etc etc, and then I remember being triggered as all fuck by the chapter with the stop and frisk, when Sam gets arrested (it’s ch8). I’m not sure if it was warned for and I missed it (it’s sort of warned for but I had no idea how graphic/realistic/prolonged it was going to be), or didn’t think I’d be so upset by it, but it was really very upsetting. From what I remember, I think it was not so much that there was graphic violence, it was that the fic is Sam POV and the author really dug into his head and you kind of experience the mind numbing horror of that kind of injustice, the powerlessness, hopelessness, fear and rage of living through that kind of trauma.
I don’t think it was handled or written poorly, and I am not saying I think anything should be changed. It’s good to have representation of the horrors of the world I guess. That’s not why I read fanfic though; it’s an escape for me, so it wasn’t good for me. If I reread the whole thing I’ll either pregame with some benzos or skip the chapter altogether. It’s just a really sensitive subject. This fic touches on a lot of things like that. So while I would rec it, and someday I’d like to reread the whole thing (I just reread the first chapter to remember it and I remember why I liked it so much! it’s really good!!), I would say: use caution, bc it’s a very realistic portrayal of life. For that reason though it’s also really good.
