...After Bilbo rescues Thorin, Thorin starts respecting him, but there's a big difference between respecting someone and liking them. What do you say to someone you have nothing in common with? If you are Thorin and Bilbo, you say all of the wrong things.
~
["Do you not have prat in your lands?""Not that I am aware of."
Bilbo was stunned. If there was one universal part of language, he had thought, surely it would be the insults. “Truly? I can't imagine how I'd talk bad about the neighbors without it. Do you have nonce?"
Thorin seemed slightly surprised by the turn this conversation had taken. "No?"
"Berk?"
"No."
"Ragger?"
"No."
“Quad?”
“No.”
"Wholly whopper?"
"No. Is that truly an insult?"
Bilbo scoffed. "A very crude one at that. I wouldn't say it if there were any female dwarves around. Kop?"
“We have a type of spade we call a kop.”
Bilbo laughed and laughed and laughed and then stopped when he realized that Thorin was not. “That’s, well, hmm.” Bilbo coughed delicately. “That’s not what it means in the Shire.”]

~
[Shepard wiggled the other control stick. She frowned at the screen. “I would like to point out that in my entire, lengthy, decorated N7 career, I have never gotten stuck in a stairwell even once.”“Okay, so that’s the camera control—wait, what are you doing?”
She wasn’t doing anything that she was aware of, although her avatar was apparently flailing against the wall. Through clenched teeth, she said, “Not even once, Garrus.”
The camera finally swung around, and her character lurched free of the wall. Garrus said, with inappropriate and probably forced cheer, “There, okay, that’s the right control.” She swung the control around, and after a moment he said, “Yes! Okay, see, just go in that direction.”
“I am going in that direction.”
“No, you’re just looking in that direction, you have to—look, if you put on autorun—”
Shepard wrinkled her nose. Her character was standing still, which wasn’t getting anything much done but was better than plunging into fiery doom. “Last time I put it on autorun I ran into a fusion reactor.”
“Yes, well.” She could hear, almost audible, the sound of Garrus trying to think of a good answer to that. Finally, silently, he held out his hand. Shepard handed him the controller, and he freed her character from being permanently trapped in a badly-rendered stairwell. Then he handed it back.
Shepard obligingly put herself on autorun and ran straight into an enemy krogan mercenary, who promptly bit her in half. She stared at the screen. “Wait wait wait,” she said. “Krogans threaten to eat you people the time, but they certainly can’t bite you in half through battle armor. Their teeth are too blunt. I speak from experience.”
“Maybe… you should restart,” Garrus said, sounding tired.
“They could gnaw on you for a while. That might work. But not with their helmets on.”
“I think you’re missing the point, Shepard.”
“I think this game is missing the point.”]

Retelling of Page and Squire from Lalasa's POV.
~
[A month before the day when Kel was to take her Ordeal, to walk into that Chamber and only maybe walk out, Lalasa walked down to the waiting room that lay outside of it. She sat on the stark pews for a long moment, looking up at the iron door. It’s a nightmare box, Kel had told her. A hammer.
It broke people open and showed them their darkest parts. It was a beating, a branding, a brutal holy rite for the men and women who dared to be the defenders of the kingdom.
Kel had come to visit it often in the years before her Ordeal, to press her palms up against its freezing iron door and grit her teeth while it played out waking nightmares before her eyes. For the rest of her life, Lalasa would never respect anyone as much as she did her stocky, brave ex-mistress. She would love few people more than she loved her stubborn, strong young friend.
Lalasa stood up and walked to stand in front of the cold iron. She did not touch the door and it felt nothing like cowardice.
You have nothing to teach me, Lalasa told the iron door, surprised. I am not your kind of hero. I know my shadows and I know my fears and that is all you can do—break people. Shatter them, so they can prove they can stand it. I don’t need to prove anything to you.
I don’t need to learn my darknesses. I needed to learn my light.
She had learned of Kel’s loyalty and Tian’s shining eyes and soft touches. Lalasa watched the girls she taught standing in the mess hall line, their knees bent subtly in a proper combat stance while they laughed, looked at each other, talked with their hands.
You killed a monster, scarred another, she told it, thinking of Joren and Vinson. You will cleanse Kel, burn her clean, because if anyone deserves to wear a shield it is Keladry of Mindelan.
But that is not my kind of strength. Lalasa firmed her chin. That doesn’t mean I am not strong.
Kel will save the world, again and again. She will blaze and a hundred young girls will find the strength to follow her footsteps, knights and warriors, saviors. Lalasa felt something hot in her chest, a burning pride for the steady young woman she had seen grow so very tall.
Kel will save the world. I will save me.
Lalasa left. She did not look back.]

Clarke Griffin and Bellamy Blake are sleeping together.(aka ROCK BAND AU)
~
[They are all visibly and intentionally protective of each other, but Blake and Griffin are the parents. When one of my questions makes Green uncomfortable (it relates to his and Jordan’s drug charges when they were both newly eighteen), Bellamy flashes me a look sharp enough to feel like it should be jutting out of my ribcage and Griffin effectively ends the conversation with a quiet “That’s enough.” I’m shunned for the rest of the day. Elbows accidentally bump into my ribs at every possible turn. Someone spills hot coffee on me. I don’t get off the bus at the designated rest stop because I’m honestly kind of afraid they’ll wait till I’m in the bathroom and drive off without me. Instead I stay inside and make easy-bake brownies I find in a cabinet in a desperate bid to buy back their love while everyone else is out getting McDonald’s.Which is how Griffin gets me alone on the bus to explain how she’s not mad, just disappointed. I feel like I have let down not only my parents and Rolling Stone magazine, but also my nation and possibly God. She has that kind of face.]

~
[Thorin was laying out his bedroll for a fifth miserable night in Mirkwood when Fili leaned over and hissed, “He signed a contract.” He raised his eyebrows at Thorin. “You know. With his name.”“Yes, I know how signatures work,” Thorin said, but he clasped his hand on Fili’s shoulder anyway. “Well done.” His nephew beamed like the sunlight they hadn’t seen for a while. A moment later, perhaps sensing his brother’s happiness and feeling the need to share in it or destroy it, whatever brotherly inclination he felt today, Kili was there as well.
“What are we talking about?” he asked, looking between the two of them. “Have we made progress on, you know, the mission?” He raised his eyebrows pointedly at Thorin. “You know. With the hobbit.”
“Yes, I knew what you were talking about,” Thorin said.
“The contract,” Fili said to Kili, and Kili oohed.
“Right! With his signature,” Kili said. “That’ll have his name, Uncle.”
“Do both of you think that I’m very bad at understanding simple concepts?” Thorin asked, then held up his hand. “Don’t answer. Who has the contract?”
“That’s the bad news. Mr. Baggins has it,” Fili said. “But I figure you can just ask to, you know, read it again. Maybe you forgot a clause or you want to make sure that he’s getting the treatment we promised him.”
“He is definitely not,” Kili said cheerfully. “This has been much worse than what we promised.”
“Enough. You’re both on first watch.” Thorin gave both of his nephews a stern look. It did less than it had when they were younger. That was the damned thing about the quest, Thorin thought as he left his nephews to stalk over to the other side of camp where Mr. Baggins and Bombur were counting out rations. You spend enough time with people, you get to see that they’re all a little ridiculous. When he was king, he’d have to make sure that no one talked to him longer than five minutes.]

Vanya's sixteen when she smokes pot for the first time. This has very unexpected consequences.
~
[“That doesn’t equal torture, Klaus!” She snaps, and for a moment, she can almost picture it herself. The vividness of her dream makes a return, not in visual memory but sensation. She remembers feeling trapped, feeling betrayed, feeling alone. She remembers darkness and silence, so utterly silent that it sickened her-A gust of wind whips her hair into her eyes hard enough that she recoils in surprise. “Ow!” She whines and the gust vanishes like it was never there. Vanya blinks her sore eyes, bewildered, and looks at Klaus to see him looking much the same.
He sat up when she wasn’t looking and now stares off into the distance with a confused frown. “What the hell is with this wind?” He wonders, bemused, and they both fall silent, paying attention to the breeze.
The breeze, of which has vanished without a trace. There’s almost no movement in the air now, just the sound of crickets and the stillness of a calm night.
“...I’m concerned.” Vanya says, a bit high pitched, and Klaus nods quickly.
“Yeah, let’s head inside. Where there’s no… suspicious breeze.” Klaus says, faltering at the ridiculousness of his own words. “Whatever. Bet we can get the chocolate chips out of the pantry without waking Mom.”
“An actual hurricane couldn’t wake Mom off schedule.” Vanya protests, wrinkling her nose a bit, but when he hops to his feet and offers her his hand, she takes it.
Chocolate chips sound awesome, anyways.]

But that day, with the ceiling around his ankles and the beginnings of ash floating in from the sky, Five realized for the first time that he was alone.

[“What were you talking about?”Before Five could say something nasty or cutting (or both!) Diego said, “the fun classes Five can take at high school now that he’s old enough to go.”
“Fuck off,” Five said, and he threw his book again.
Diego caught it. “Do you even want to read this?” He asked, before throwing it back gently, so that it landed on his lap.
“Should we enroll Five in school?” Luther asked, face contemplative like he was actually thinking about it.
Five looked horrified. “No!”
Luther laughed, and at his laugh, Five slumped.
“Kidding, kidding,”
“Did you actually think we would?” Diego asked.
“I’m going to read in my room now,” Five said, glaring at the both of them. “No, actually, I’m going to go visit Vanya. I bet she wouldn’t make me go to high school.”
As Five teleported away, Diego whipped out his phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Shh, this is important.”
He texted Vanya, told her to ask Five about AP courses.
He was rewarded with a very gratifying shriek of rage when Five teleported back home a minute later.]
