Jason jerks in place as a metal pipe spears through the bottom of the vent a foot in front of his face, the end of it sharpened into a savage, jagged point. He stares at it for a long moment, dumbfounded, before it disappears back through the hole it made with a horrible shriek of metal on metal. The hole’s about three inches wide and uneven, the edges bent up into sharp little bits. Jason lost his helmet back when their earlier fight had gotten out of hand, and he’s suddenly vividly aware of how vulnerable his face is, how vulnerable his eyes are, and he can barely lift his head more than a couple of inches in his position. There’s a vague murmur coming from the goons down below, but Jason can’t make out the words through the buzz of panic in his ears; he’s a sitting duck if they realize someone’s up here.
He glances at Tim, who’s frozen, staring at Jason with mirrored shock.
Oh, fuck.

That time, a full body shiver had momentarily wracked his body instead of the adrenaline required to block a kick. His broken ribs made sure to thank him for that one.
