He misses working with Benton more than he cares to admit, and he can’t quite figure out how Doctor Elizabeth Corday so effortlessly commands Benton's attention. When Corday offers Carter the incredible chance to present a case at a prestigious medical conference in London, it feels like everything might finally be coming together.
Spoiler alert: he never makes it to London.
OR
A devastating accident derails Carter's plans and his skills as a doctor are put to the test, but in the wreckage, he and Benton might find a way to start rebuilding what he so desperately misses.

Summary
When his phone rang loud in the stillness, waking Jack from the sleep of the dead he'd perfected in war zones half a world away, he sat straight up in bed and knew: something was wrong.
His phone announced it was Dana—and it was 0721—which shot a little thrum of worry through him as he answered. "What happened?" he asked, no preamble. She wouldn't wake him if shit hadn't gone sideways.
"Robby hasn't come in yet and he's not answering his phone," she said, voice grim. "He's never missed a shift without calling." She spoke quietly, probably standing in the middle of the ED, trying to keep up a brave face for everyone else. As much as she could, anyway. People tended to notice when the fucking chief attending didn't show up to work.

Summary
Abbot leans in at Robby's ear, voice gentle as Frank's ever heard it but still with the ex-military no-nonsense tone that suggests he’s giving an order he expects to be obeyed. “Robby?”
“Yeah?”
“Would you kindly stop teaching for a second so we can focus on saving your life?”

Summary
All things considered, there are worse places to wake up than the floor of an exam room at County. Better places, too, but Carter learned by the end of his first ER rotation that a large part of being successful in emergency medicine is learning to work with what you actually have as opposed to what you wish you did.
For one thing, waking up on the floor of exam two in what Carter assumes is the middle of a shift means he's (1) waking up at all and (2) oriented to person and place. He's not so sure about the time element of it all, but two out of three ain't bad.

Summary
The clouds have taken on colorful hues, purples and pinks and oranges, swirling across the sky like soap on the surface of a tub. Hans turns onto his side. Henry watches him from the edge of his periphery. If he doesn’t move. If he stays just like this. Sunset glow, sweetness from the bun clinging to his mouth, Hans’s breath breaking against the side of his face. Perfect. Everything here and now is perfect.
A pair of beaten metal rings. A package of sweet buns. A pitcher of red wine and two cups. A freshly washed blanket. A clearing in the woods. A superstition—bad luck to see the other party before a wedding. Through the makings of a perfect day, Henry navigates Rattay and endless possibility on his way to his secret wedding.

Summary
When at last she catches sight of him, all grievance in her voice evaporates.
“Carter?”
He's curled on his side beneath his comforter, eyes closed, evidently still deep asleep. The cause of his state is explained in the rosiness spreading across his cheeks and nose, the unmistakable flare of fever. Where the flush doesn't reach, there's instead complete pallor.
She sets her crutch against the wall and wanders to his bedside, the physician within her momentarily silenced as she stands over him, just watching the slow shallowness of his breaths.
He's sick.
OR
While Carter is renting from Kerry in S5, he falls sick one day, and things are far worse than they initially seem.

In an attempt to change her clock back to 2021, an error message appeared instead.
And maybe Callie didn’t have her mother’s Ivy League-sized brain, but she could put it together. In the middle of the woods, her phone displaying it was 1996, of all possible years. It was quite the elaborate nightmare, she’d give her brain that one.

Summary
“It’s going to be fine,” Jack promises him, as if he can promise him that. “Flu’s not taking you down, is it?”
“Guess it’s your job to make sure it doesn’t,” Robby replies. Despite the verbal blows Jack just aimed right into his ribs, he still feels bad for the way Jack’s face drains of color once he’s said it. “Jack—”
“Go lay down before it starts,” Jack instructs him, and Robby recognizes Dr. Abbot taking over in more ways than one. “I’ll come check on you in an hour, alright?”
For one more heartbeat, Jack doesn’t move. Again, Robby feels the pang down the center of his chest into his stomach that simultaneously tells him to kiss him and reminds him that he can’t.
or: robby catches a deadly flu in the pitt while treating patients. jack is his only hope for survival.

Summary
Henry hated how his mouth was suddenly dry, “Torture, Sir?”
Radzig cast a sharp eye over him. “I know it’s distasteful, but it can’t be helped. This is too important.”
Henry never told his father about what happened to him deep in the bowels of the Trosky dungeons. Past is past, and airing it out only ever brings heartache.
He avoids torture, he avoids dungeons, he avoids anything that makes him feel like he's back there.
It works, until a bandit is captured, and Radzig expects Henry to be the one to interrogate him.

Summary
"Robby felt like an asshole even before he hit the call button.
Abbott had been crowing about his impending vacation days for weeks now. A reprieve from the madness he called it. Jack had even taken to pointing out the fire extinguishers scattered around the Pitt during handoff- just in case the place caught fire without him. So Robby knew it was shitty to call, shitty to put this- his crap on him-
But Jack had made him promise.
And he was trying, trying to be better. Trying to lead by example, trying not to end up on that damn rooftop- or at least trying to stay on the right side of the railing.
So he hit the fucking button."

She has to say it. She has to say it, because the last time someone was rolled away from her on a gurney it was to the morgue. Brushing the pads of her thumbs over his cheekbones, Samira stoops until their foreheads touch, her lips ghosting over his.
“I love you,” she whispers, eyes wide open.
Jack’s mouth curves into a gentle smile.
“I know.”

Summary
Carter doesn't quite know what compels him to do what he does. Perhaps it's some misguided sense of heroism, his lifelong inability to just let things be when there's something- anything- he can do about it. Perhaps it's reckless stupidity brought on by yet another shift of doing anything but saving lives.
Whatever it is, he leans into it fully, and slips into the freezing depths.

Summary
“What the hell happened?”
“What happened, Michael,” Jack answers, hard, as if Robby can’t see the broken-open expression on his face, “is you got yourself hit by about five thousand pounds of steel and dropped out on me—”
“Shit,” Robby curses. “Jack— I’m sorry. You okay?”
Jack laughs without much humor in it. “Are you— Are you kidding me? Seriously? Your heart stopped on my table, you’re asking if I’m fucking okay?”
“Yeah, I am,” Robby says, because if it’d been Jack without a pulse on his table, he knows he would not be anywhere near okay.
