Halsin had stepped valiantly into a portal that blinked out of existence when their party was overwhelmed in combat. They hadn’t been close all those years ago, but Halsin had been the first to die, and Astarion would be the last as he was always destined to be. There was something meaningful in that.
Immortality leaves one with rather a lot of years to keep track of. 150 years since saving the realm. 146 years since marrying Wyll. 79 years since becoming a widow. 13 years since the last of his former companions passed on without him.
Of all the things Astarion has suffered in his long life, the one blow he's no longer capable of weathering is suffering all on his own. When he finds his way to the Shadow-Cursed lands in search of place to waste away in peace, the last thing he expects to find is a kindred spirit in similar need of healing.

He worried about Karlach and Wyll in Avernus, of Lae'zel in the astral plane, of Shadowheart and her parents - but no single member of their party occupied his thoughts like Astarion. In ways he never considered, Astarion took up residence in his mind, in his heart. Gale smiled softly, running his fingers through his greying hair. "Of course.”

Wyll hums and then leans forward to kiss him. Astarion melts, eyes fluttering shut at the touch of Wyll's lips, getting comfortable in Wyll's lap.
Too comfortable. He's completely caught off-guard when Wyll slides one arm beneath Astarion's hips and one tight around his waist, and then flips him over, so that Astarion is dangling over the edge of the sofa. He shrieks, flinging his arms out to catch himself—though Wyll has him held tight and safe, of course.

His whims are catered to by attentive servants who make sure he is fed, clothed, and content. He never grows hungry, never wants for much. His education is seen to by the best teachers his father can find, attending lessons for music and dance and even sword fighting.
Many of his peers call Wyll kind, strong-willed, sometimes even arrogant as all young boys of his station are. He’s smart and generous for his age, running into most challenges head first and intent on succeeding. A stubborn boy with a good heart—his mother’s heart, his father will say quietly when there is no one else to hear his voice grow soft.
But from the moment that Wyll Ravengard was born he has been wracked by pain so severe that the medics had thought he would die before he ever reached his first year.

- Or -The Netherese Orb absorbs life energy and now Gale kills everything he touches. After a year of fruitless research in his tower, he goes to Baldur’s gate looking for answers. He takes a job as a cook in a seedy tavern so he can use the animals on the menu to feed the orb.
Astarion is out on the prowl and his latest hunting ground shows promise. It’s a shame the handsome guy in the kitchen is so shy. He would be excellent prey.
**This fic updates around 1 to 2x a week. Chapters are on the shorter side (1500 to 3k), but you get them quick!**

Two months after the brain falls, Baldur's Gate has picked up most of the pieces. The heroes that saved Faerûn have been there through most of it, helping the city get back on its feet. But now it's time to move on. Old lives and families to return to. Gale is going back to his tower in Waterdeep, back to the quiet, back to being alone; or at least, that was the plan. But plans change.
This is a story about falling in love.
