    Summary

    Kalymina vil Droth, a hedonistic wild mage; Epiphany Mazali, a diaspora monk sworn to the Raven Queen; and Taren the Stinger, a soldier of the militant Sun Kingdom. These warriors and more are drawn into events that will forever shape their universe as it recovers from the temporal event called the Syzygy. Features dramatic boss fights, fantasy geopolitics, and a nonlinear healing journey for a deeply problematic and sympathetic trans woman.

    These are narrativizations of a D&D campaign continuity that I've been quietly running and playing in for the past decade and a half. The fics here cover the final arcs that we played from 2021-2024, with a bit of context for what came before. The setting is a collaborative homebrew world that uses the Fourth Edition cosmology and pantheon. I have been posting these to my Substack, but a friend asked me to post them on Ao3 as well, so here you go!

    Summary


    aikuru adj. unknown, obscure, foggy, dark.
    A Matoric word. Possibly from ai-kuru, lit. “being unclear” (ai- “being”)
    or from ai-kuru “out of unclarity” (ai_ “out of”), or perhaps
    from a phrase ai kuru “it (is) unclear” (ai “it”).

    This is a collection of short stories and associated artwork set within the world and universe of BIONICLE (a property of LEGO). Many of these stories explore themes related to the emergence of self-actualization, culture, and emotional complexity amongst the inhabitants of the BIONICLE universe. A similar theme of these stories is “forbidden knowledge”, dealing with cases where the creatures of BIONICLE gain some knowledge about the nature of their world and are forced to grapple with it, sometimes with disastrous results. Themes of death, loss, change, companionship, betrayal, curiosity, obsession, and the weariness of duty may also be found.

    I hope that you enjoy these works, and that, through these stories and the accompanying art, you too may glimpse the way that is called BIONICLE.

    Bionicle’s worldbuilding has always had deeply underutilized potential for cosmic horror. This saga brings back the eerie atmosphere of mystery from the line’s early days, and supercharges it by centering low-powered characters who have very little chance to make sense of their horrifying world, only to try and scrape by in it. A multitude of masterpieces.
