Summary
“You,” BJ said aloud, as the hum of the hospital continued around them. There was no adequate end to the sentence. You have to wake up, so I can tell you I need you. BJ felt tears stinging his eyes as they formed, and he blinked them furiously away. He noted that someone had cleared the vomit from Hawkeye’s face, and the blood from his hair.
In another life, maybe, far into the future when the lines began to blur further, he thought he might have been meant to be a nurse, to take care with people who were beloved to someone, to clean their hair and their hands and to dress them in gowns and bedclothes. No more cutting, no more blood. He’d always thought Margaret would have done well in their shoes, but he never thought about taking hers. Or maybe it was all nonsense, and it was only Hawkeye whose troubles he wanted to smooth away.- Language:

Summary
Erin Hunnicutt spends the summer in Seattle with her dad and the old war buddies she didn't know he had.
“My mom said we met when I was younger,” Erin said. She was still holding her green bag, standing stiffly in the middle of the living room. “Have you and my dad been friends for a long time?”
“Let’s see…we met in ‘52 That’d be 15 years now. I guess when you put it like that it just makes me sound old,” Hawkeye said.
Erin didn’t think he looked any older than her father. She’d always thought her father looked old, that there were lines in his face that weren’t in the faces of her friends’ fathers. She’d seen photos of him just before she was born. He looked young in those pictures. There was a childlike quality to his smile.
“You met my dad during the war,” Erin said.
Hawkeye smiled at her, and then tilted his head to one side, curiously. “He really didn’t tell you a thing about me, did he?” he said.
“My dad doesn’t tell me anything,” Erin said.
Hawkeye rolled his eyes. “Well, that makes two of us,” he said. “Your dad, I mean, not my dad. My dad calls me to tell me what he had for lunch.”

Summary
Suddenly he felt panicked and crazy. Dreams weren’t like this. Dreams didn’t rake the hot coals of the past so aggressively. Nostalgia, fantasy, booze tinted glasses were one thing, but this was another.
“It feels so real, Hawk,” BJ mumbled.
“BJ?” Hawkeye said. BJ could see him lift his head. His hair stood up, making a funny shadow on the wall. “Did you say something? Are you dreaming?”
“I can’t tell. This feels just like the day we met,” BJ said.
“The day we—oh,” Hawkeye’s voice got thin and vulnerable. “Oh, BJ, it’s all going to be okay. Trust me. You know me, don’t you? You know I wouldn’t lie?”

Summary
It doesn’t really hit Hawkeye until they’ve finally reached the city, and Mulcahy’s eyes are staring in big, round, blue wonder at all the lights outside the window— His heart doesn’t sink, exactly, but it’s not really soaring, either. What do two men do on vacation from the worst place on Earth that can’t involve committing several offenses against God?
—
They’ve been in Korea for a year and a half, and Mulcahy’s never been on R&R before. The best and obvious choice to teach an uptight little chaplain how to unwind is Hawkeye Pierce. But who better than Father Mulcahy to show a crazy agnostic that he might not need that much help after all?

Summary
“In your profession, even when someone gets lost they aren’t really gone, but unfortunately there aren’t too many prodigal patients around here. Once they’re lost, they’re out of our hands. You don’t have to like it but you do have to accept it, otherwise you’re just sucking around for a one-way ticket to the bug house.”
Mulcahy’s eyes are a crystalline blue, shining in the impersonal overhead light. He makes the cramped little space feel like a cathedral, his voice carrying the gravitas of a pipe organ. “Do you accept that, Hawkeye?”
---
Set partway through the episode where the nurses have all been evacuated, this story takes place directly after the surgery session where Father Mulcahy is assisting Hawkeye in the OR.
Let’s keep those sponges coming, Father. ‘Nurse’ is also a verb.

Summary
Easter, 1965
Hawkeye stretches luxuriously under his cotton sheets and handmade quilt, eyes slow to focus on the figure sitting in his reading chair across the room. Francis, chin in his hand, book on his knee, gazing out the window and looking a million miles away.
Even after all these years, sometimes it takes Hawkeye a minute to remember, and then to believe.

Summary
Hawkeye’s gaze fell to his boots against the floor of the tent. He flicked his tongue across his lips as if to prepare to speak, and then closed his mouth with a humorless laugh. After a long inhale through his nose, Hawkeye glanced quickly at the door and then to the ceiling. “Is love a sin, Father?”

Summary
The door falls to with a bang and Hawkeye is left alone in a room with Father Mulcahy for the first time in two weeks.
He’d been subtle about it. It took Hawkeye a day or two to figure out what he was doing but ever since that night, the priest has been performing a carefully measured dance set to the tune of keeping himself from being alone with Hawkeye.
---
Or: A doctor is needed at the orphanage. With BJ and Charles unavailable, Father Mulcahy has to ask Hawkeye to go with him, despite the unresolved tension between them. A thunderstorm traps them there overnight.

Summary
BJ dreams of going to him, sometimes, crawling on his hands and knees and resting his forehead on Hawkeye’s lap. In the dream, Hawkeye presses his fingers into BJ’s suboccipital muscles, then his trapezius, relaxing him until he’s just a collection of bone and ligament, calcium and protein, before flipping him over and taking him apart.
He wonders what it feels like. Hawkeye always goes slack after he’s been fucked, as close to completely still as he ever gets, sweet and pliant. He thinks about it— letting go.

Summary
"I mean, everybody imagines, right? You just...pull from when you've thought about...that."
BJ chuckles, but it's not in the way that Hawk was anticipating. No, it's still that throaty purr that Hawkeye really, really wants right against his ear. "You saying you have?"
"Have what?"
"Thought about it."
"Of course I have. That's exactly what I'm saying. If a guy told you he's never imagined another fella in his bed, he's bullshitting you." In the long, twisting silence that follows, Hawk finally chances a look and blinks at the sight of BJ's pink face. Okay, so Hawkeye's guided them down a bit more of a bizarre path than he'd intended. But BJ's not exactly telling him to stop. He wonders how far Beej'll let him take it before he finally balks and pulls out one of his millions of letters from his perfect, pretty wife. "Wait, wait, hold on, lemme get this straight, you've seriously never even considered it?"
