Summary
The ink hadn’t even dried up on Jayce’s PhD diploma when the job offer landed in his inbox. Prestigious, well-funded, and in a country he had never even considered moving to. At the time, it had seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime.
But being there now, staring at a stack of unread emails, most of them marked urgent in varying degrees of exaggeration, Jayce wonders if he’d been a little too eager to say yes.
He came here to innovate, teach, and change the game, but lately, it feels like he spends more time fighting bureaucracy than breaking ground.
And there’s also Viktor.

Summary
“So... you’re a transfer student?” Jayce ventures, trying to fill the silence.
Viktor shakes his head. “Exchange student. From The Czech Republic. I was in a dorm, but the elevator is broken more than it works. Housing made arrangements.” He sets his suitcase down and adjusts his cane, his movements precise but clearly strained.
“Right,” Jayce says, feeling a flicker of guilt for his earlier irritation. “Well, uh, welcome, I guess. Your room’s down the hall on the left.”
Viktor doesn’t respond, already moving toward the hallway without waiting for further instructions. Jayce watches him disappear into the room, the door clicking shut behind him.
He flops back onto the couch, grabbing his phone to text Caitlyn again:
Jayce: He hates me already.
Caitlyn: Don’t so be dramatic. Give it time. Maybe bake him cookies or something.
Jayce: He doesn’t seem like a cookie guy. More like... brooding and vaguely annoyed at my existence.
Caitlyn: Perfect. You’re great at brooding and vaguely annoying. 😘

Summary
Once Neil gets to about page 6 when looking over his play, he feels his eyebrows furrow. Now, obviously since the play was about the Poets as a whole, there wasn’t really a main character. There would be a more prominent character in each given scene, but Neil made sure to avoid making himself the one who narrated and directed the entire story.
But once he was about halfway through rereading what he had so far, he realized that every character more or less revolved around one Poet in particular. Every scene managed to include the character, there were always in-depth descriptions of what he and his facial expressions looked like, and everyone either went to him for help or obviously valued his opinion highly.
Neil had named the character William, and he was realizing now that he had included a surprising amount of descriptions about this character’s blond hair, blue eyes, and unassuming but devout personality.
Oh shit, Neil thinks to himself, I accidentally made Todd the main character.
Or in which it's 1960, the Poets' senior year at Welton, and Neil's writing a secret play, his magnum opus, but there's just one problem: Todd keeps getting in the way.

Summary
Even Neil Perry, a purely good man though everyone knew him to be, was not spared from the ill-making feelings which made men fume at their own luck, which made them maudlin and spiteful. Even Neil Perry, good man though he was, could not escape the grasping, clutching hands of jealousy.
Or in which Neil finds Todd’s secret notebook of love poetry and is immediately driven mad by his own speculations; Charlie is amused and, while not all-knowing, somehow much smarter than his dumb friend. Todd just wants to know if his bed has eaten his book again.

Summary
Tonight, Eddie’s ready to relax, barefoot and hair curled over his forehead, crossing his legs on the floor and reaching for the first box the delivery guy delivered fifteen minutes ago on the dot, so it wasn’t too hot and wasn’t too cool.
Tonight Richie’s hands are clenched hard and white and unforgiving around his fork where he’s picking at the food he’s ordered every single Thursday for three years and pretending not to stare.
Tonight there are egg rolls cooling on the big, clunky wooden coffee table and some QVC show on wedding dresses Richie flipped to after Cool Runnings ended playing on the television when Eddie flinches his left arm and says:
“Myra wants one of those things.”
