Ben Solo’s face appeared behind Luke on the screen. “Hi, Aunt Mara!”
“Hi, Ben,” she answered with a warm smile.
Her nephew’s dark hair hung loose around his face as he greeted her with that rogue-ish smile so much like his father’s. “Why are you on Jakku?”
“I’m bringing some souvenir sand back for your uncle. You know how much he misses it.”
Luke rolled his eyes and Ben barked a laugh as he opened the medical storage supply closet. At 19 years old, he was tall and lanky and not yet fully grown into the breadth of his shoulders. There was power to his movements, though, signifying that he would be quite formidable in a few years. When he turned, his arms were full of bacta patches.
Mara quirked an eyebrow. “Problem?”
“He’s got the little ones on the training sabers today,” Luke answered.
“Lots of ouchies,” Ben confirmed as he headed out of the room.
Mara waited until he was gone to say, “He’s good with the kids.”
_
Rey nodded and closed her eyes. Mara couldn’t help but smile at the eagerness of youth as she reached forward and let her hands hover just beside the girl’s head. Opening herself fully to the Force, she let the power roll over and through her, warm waves of familiarity that helped to center her intent and guided her when to touch her fingertips to Rey’s temples…
The world exploded.
power
a light ripped from the stars
power
a maw gaping in the darkness
power
a cruel laugh
power
a mother’s desperate cry
power
…across the Galaxy, Ben Solo turned to face her, his lips parting in wonder…
_
“When I was ten years old,” Ben began reflectively, “I started having dreams. Flashes of people I’d never met. The insides of ships I’d never been on. We were learning foresight and I just thought it was the Force, you know, showing me things.”
Rey turned away from the glowing forest to listen.
“And then, a few years later, my dreams started being about a desert. Always a big, expansive desert. I knew it had to be Tatooine.” He glanced down at her. “My family is from there. Uncle Luke and his father and his grandmother. So, I just knew it was the Force telling me to go to Tatooine. I drove my parents crazy about it,” he said with a grin, reminiscing. “I kept on and on about going to Tatooine until, finally, they took me. And then, when we got there…” He gazed out over the water and shook his head, as if remembering. “It wasn’t right. It wasn’t the place from my dreams at all.”

“—Ben? Who the hell is Ben? We don’t even know anybody by that name!” Finn said with a sneer.
“We do, actually.” Rey corrected. “His name is Ben Solo, we started seeing each other around the time of your engagement and while you were away, we—“
“Hold on.” Finn interrupted, placing a hand up to physically and verbally stop her from proceeding. “Professor Solo? Professor Fucking Solo? That asshole English teacher at the university that berates us every time we get his order wrong?
At that very ill timed moment, Ben appeared around the corner from the kitchen, wondering what was keeping Rey.
“Rey? I have Netflix all cued up and the popcorn is ready, who’s…” He started but the moment he made eye contact with the irate man still lingering out in the hallway, Ben stopped dead in his tracks. “Oh, shit.” He said under his breath.
“YOU!!” Finn bellowed and stormed into the apartment, almost barreling Rey over in an attempt to get to Ben. “What have you done to her!”

“C-3?” he piped.
“Yes, sir?”
He peeked up through his curls. “Can I have some cake?”
"May I have some cake, Master Solo.”
“But you can’t have any cake,” he said gravely, even as his small, moist mouth began to curl at the corners. “You’re metal.”
“Oh my oh dear, I’ve fallen for it again! You are simply too clever, sir…”
___
“So cold,” she sighed again.
“Do you-” he stopped, choking on the ache. “Do you want me to get the pilot?”
Even through the glare of white, he saw one corner of her long, thin mouth tick upwards beyond her oxygen. “Why, am I flying somewhere?”
He snorted wetly, and tried again. “I can have C-3 brought back-”
“Ludicrous.” Her fingertips, small and nearly translucent, appeared in the spaces between his much larger fingers. Slowly, like seedheads creeping through moist, black earth to meet the sun, they grew longer, until she could curl them ever-slightly over his. “My son is here now. That’s all I need.”
His heart squeezed. Ludicrous.
So that’s where my wife learned it.
He looked away from her closed, peaceful expression, to the posy of roses he laid on the table beside her, their crimson petals soft and deep like wet velvet against the searing white. He stared into their delicate, intricate folds, letting his sanity unwind, until he thought he heard their secrets creeping up like aphids from their bound, budding hearts.
I love you, his wife had whispered into them, kneeling in front of his grandfather’s bacta tank. I love you, Kylo Ren.
He hung his head.
“Are those for me?” His mother had removed her oxygen again. Her voice was as delicate as a spider’s web, trembling with fragile strength beneath the dew.

She rolled her eyes. “Meant to be.” she felt tears threaten to fall. “I’m not meant for anything. You said that yourself. I have no part in this story.” she said her lip trembling in response to the words that burned her that weren’t meant to sting lastingly.
He shook his head. “You are a part of my story Rey.” he whispered. “I’m a part of yours. Don’t be afraid.” he said and crossed the distance and their lips met this time without force or urgency.
_
“If you know who I am tell me!” she demanded.
“I don’t tell bedtime stories to princesses or princes.” Tor Valum said talking to them both. “And I don’t play with my food.” the being said coiling its tentacles and they all rose around the both of them. “I can’t let you live. Darth Sideous would not.”
_
“And you put your bloody hand to the wall?” he asked.
She looked down at her hand.
Luke blinked. “You are a descendant of Lady Corvax?” he said suddenly understanding.
Rey swayed and looked around. “How…I am no one.”
_
“General Goodwin, now Lady Goodwin carries my child… It will be my firstborn before this one,” he whispered his heartbreaking. “It happened when I locked you in the cells,” he confessed and his hand softened prepared for her to push him away but she just looked confused. “I should have told you. I have no excuse. I am not worthy.”

He shouldn’t read it. Even if their bond afforded him insight to her thoughts and feelings, he should allow her this privacy. But his eyes betrayed him, sliding back to the words of their own accord. He caught “I love you” and prickly heat speared his chest. What was this, a farewell note to some amour? The defector perhaps?
He crooked his fingers to call the pages to hand, then reconsidered using the Force, and slipped them from under her arm, slowly and with utmost care to avoid waking her. Maybe he shouldn’t read it, shouldn’t violate her trust like that, but intel was intel. And she was still the enemy.
He shuffled the sheets into order and began at the top.

“You couldn’t help yourself, couldn’t you?” he finally managed to rasp between short breaths, his voice cracking, “you always have to do the right thing,”
“Not everything has to be a statement, you know?” She mumbled, annoyed at how much the last few minutes had affected her. “Plus, I’m pretty sure that the right thing would have been to let you die.”
The war is over, and, to Hux's surprise, capital punishment is not an option in the newly reborn Republic. His life sentence will be served in a new space station called The Monument, built to monitor and contain the massive asteroid field that once was the Hosnian System. Some might say that there's almost some kind of poetic justice to be found in convicting a man to a lifetime of rebuilding what he has destroyed, but there's nothing poetic in the complex, abrasive relationship he ends up developing with the Chief Developer of the project, Rose Tico.

Yes, Hux followed gossip now, well, more like absorbed it from the guards and the personnel he interacted with at the base, but his life was so utterly empty at this point his mind seemed devoted to storing the most useless information.

Threepio now starts bickering with Artoo. Some things never change, Kylo sees. “It is correct protocol. We have served this family for generations now. And Master Benny is all that remains of the family. He’s killed all the rest.” Threepio rests a comforting metal arm on Artoo’s dome. “We have served two Queens, three Senators, two Jedi, two Republics, the Rebellion, and the Resistance. Now, we shall serve an Emperor too.”

“Tell you what,” Finn flashes his friendly smile. “How about Rose and I go tear up Canto Bight again to get back at those war profiteers once we get the X-wings?”
Finn is trying to be upbeat. It’s not a serious offer, but Rey takes it at face value. She gripes again, “That’s Rose’s solution to everything, isn’t it? Fighting and violence?” Rose is very angry at the First Order, like Finn and so many of the others who have joined them at the Dantooine base. All are here to fight for freedom and justice, but there’s a twinge of vengeance to their zeal too. “You didn’t stop war profiteering by rampaging through Canto Bight. You just cost their insurance companies credits,” Rey complains. “All anyone saw was two uniformed Resistance fighters creating indiscriminate mayhem. You didn’t change anyone’s mind about us by doing that.”

Even with a sword at his throat, the Imperial veteran still has plenty of reckless courage left. “The moment I learned you were Leia Organa’s kid, I feared it would come to this. You really are your mother's son, aren't you?” he accuses with bitter contempt.
“Yes. Yes, I am,” Kylo answers. “My grandmother was a member of the Old Republic Senate. My mother was a member of the Imperial Senate. Democracy is in my blood, just like the Force and the Empire. All of it is my birthright and my destiny, and I will let no one stand in my way.”

Ben Solo Declared Dead
“Six years after the mysterious disappearance of Ben (Organa) Solo, Callwick police have closed his missing persons case and declared him legally dead. This news comes as no shock to the local community. His parents, Leia Organa and Han Solo, were not available for comments.
Rey clicks back six years in the archives of the newspaper until she finds the very first articles published about it. She moves onto other articles after a while, but after two hours of reading, they all start to sound the same. 24 year-old Ben Solo was staying at his family manor at the time of the disappearance. When his father returned from his last flight, Ben was no where to be found. None of his personal belongings were missing, his car was in the garage, and house lights were on, leading the police to suspect foul play. They opened a missing persons case immediately instead of waiting 24 hours. But that was the end of the trail. Ben had been home alone for nearly two weeks, with no credit card or phone use during that time, and very little internet activity, which cutoff completely 4 days before Han returned. His parents told police that was not unusual; he traveled frequently and often came home for a few weeks at a time for a break from people and technology. They combed the surrounding country side but found nothing. With a four day window for his disappearance, getting airtight alibis from all the surrounding neighbors was nearly impossible. With no leads, no evidence, and no suspects, the case quickly went cold. Keeping it open was more of a gesture of kindness for his family than out of any belief he would be found.
_
“You told me to hide it,” he mumbles, fiddling with the frayed edges of a hole in one knee of his jeans.
Her mouth works, and she shakes her head as if to clear it.
“I was walking along the path to Snoke's house,” Ben explains. “And all of a sudden, this girl appears in front of me - you. You were cold and shivering. There was snow around your feet and in your hair and you were standing next to a white horse.”
Rey shakes her head again. “I don't understand.”
Ben shrugs. “I asked who you are and you said 'Rey.' And then you begged me to leave, said not to confront Snoke. You were so terrified. I told you I had to speak to Snoke. You nearly screamed at me, but then told me I absolutely had to hide the tape recorder, as soon as I left Snoke's house. I'll never forget it. You said 'please Ben, hide the recorder and then run, as far from Snoke as you can. Please.' And then you disappeared.
'Disturbed' was too light of a word for how she felt at that moment. “That's how you knew who I was,” she said. “What about the dreams?”
His eyebrows quirk up. “What dreams?”
“I – you were in my dreams, a couple times.”
He hums thoughtfully. “What were they about?”
She blushes, words stumbling around. “Umm nothing really. We just kind of looked at each other. You said some weird things. They were very short.”
He tilts his head and chews his lip; her answer is clearly suspect, but he doesn't push it. “They say time isn't linear,” he muses. “I don't have an explanation. I'm dead but I'm here. I saw you but I didn't. I don't know.”
_
He huffs and shoves away from the couch, dragging a hand through his hair. “Rey, I'm dead!”
“I'm not really here. We can't – this can't work.”
“Why not,” she whispers stubbornly.
His jaw hangs open. “Well for starters, you'd have to come here to see me since I can't leave, so good luck explaining that to my parents or just generally figuring that out. You can't tell anyone about me, I can never be a real part of your life. We can't ever do normal things like get married, have kids, travel. I'll just stay like this while you get older and older. If you get sick or stuck somewhere or need help like today, I can't help you. I can't do anything. And if you do try to explain this situation to anyone, they'll think you're nuts and lock you up in a mental hospital, or put you on meds and turn you into a zombie. I can hold you and kiss you but I can't cook you pancakes for breakfast or unzip your dress when you're stuck, we can't take nighttime drives just for the hell of it. I can't pick you flowers or take out our trash or put a ring on your finger.” His voice breaks and the resulting silence is punctuated by the patter of Rey's tears against her lap. She cranes her neck up and spares him a trembling look. “You want all of that? Truly?”
He crouches next to her and drags her gently onto his lap, tucking her under his chin. “I want all of that so badly it feels like the wanting might kill me.”

“But he needs to be told in the right way. If I had told him everything when he first awoke, we would have surely lost him. It is my hope that you can do this. You have my permission to do as you feel is right.”
“Really?” she responded, flabbergasted by the ease in which he were giving her this and also terrified of the weight he was placing upon her shoulders. “But what if it goes wrong? What if I say or do the wrong thing –“
“Trust your instincts. I have already failed him. You haven’t.” Rey swallowed hard. She certainly didn’t sign up for this. “I think that it’s fitting.”
“Fitting?”
“You’ve already saved him once.”
_
“I understand your frustrations,” he murmured as the moment stretched. “You need to tell me if you’re struggling. Don’t try and bottle it up. It doesn’t help.”
“That sounds like experience talking,” she turned to look at him. She had slouched forwards and closed her eyes when taking deep breaths. He had stayed composed by her side.
He studied her expression before inclining his head. “Everyone has issues when training. I struggled to keep calm and focused.”
“Well, you do a good job now,” she tried to lighten the mood but it was fascinating. Morbidly so. Emotions rolled through her. Two different images of the man before her flashed into her head.
“Years of practice,” he shrugged. “Promise me that you’ll tell me, Rey. I don’t want you to suffer.”
