“Thank you,” He says, flashing a fanged grin that’s just a little too bright, a little too sharp, “I do try.”

“What’s for breakfast?” he goes, voice casual; might as well start neutral before they spiral into something heavier.
Kazansky, glances back briefly—enough to check that Mitchell’s upright and alive, probably, or maybe just out of incredulity—then turns to flip something sizzling in the pan, reply exactly what Mitchell was expecting.
“Eggs and bacon.”

You’ll be able to see him soon.” Ellie starts to sit again, to stand, to go to him, but Maria squeezes her hands in warning. “First, we need to make sure you’re okay. Next, we need to understand what happened out there, what Tommy and Dina can’t tell us. Then, I’ll take you to Joel.”

Now that she mentions it, she does recognize the name. The Erikson boys are nice enough, one older than her, one younger. Both humongous. Just like their mother, who is towering over Ellie as they speak.
“That’s…nice,” Ellie says, uncomfortable. “But, um. Why?”
Mrs. Erikson smiles. “Because, dear. I thought it would be good for us all to get to know each other. Seeing as Tommy Miller came and talked to us about the possibility of you coming to live with us.”

He might be experiencing some confusion.”
“Your brother is unconscious, Mr. Miller. He isn’t experiencing anything at the moment. And I can assure you, the minor in our care is very much alive.”

Summary
Somewhere along the way, his girl’s gotten to believing that she’s a superhero. He doesn’t disagree, not necessarily, but he still sees the parts of her that are less man of steel and more little girl that grew up lonely and leans in to praise like a plant growing towards the sun. He sees it. Tommy and Maria see it. And evidently, Marshall fucking Green saw it.
Or, everyone has blind spots. Someone tries to exploit one of Ellie’s and its handled accordingly.
