I’d be a little more grateful if I were you.” Deb takes her arm back, and the plastic of the steering wheel squeaks in her grip. “I know this isn’t easy for you, but it isn’t for me, either, Shauna.”

Feelings of nausea pop up sometimes, or a sudden intense panic when he feels caught doing nothing to aid them through winter. Nat never blames him for skipping hunts these days, saying something about how you can’t do a rush job on grieving, but he feels like he’s letting her down all the same.

“Try and patch up something of what used to be us. I missed you— Miss you, right now. Something was gone from my life and I didn’t know how to handle it. Yes, that’s immature. Yes, I probably should’ve gotten over it. But I didn’t want to. I—I didn’t want it to be over, forever, just like that.”
“You can want all you like. That doesn’t change that there’s two of us here.” Shauna glares. “Don’t I have a say in this?”
“Of course you do,” and Jackie’s eyes look up at her from behind her lashes; pleading to go easy on her.
Shauna considers it; takes in the sagging shoulders and circles under her eyes. Jackie does look worse than she ever did before. College evidently didn’t result in a reinvention of herself, or at least not in the way she mused on in high school.

Summary
She’s glad to still have some decent reflex in her, moving the pointy end of the pole up like a spear against Shauna’s anger. The whittling project was to give it more grip, but Jackie doesn’t mind the additional benefits when it graces Shauna’s stomach and she flinches back. Jackie bears her own teeth in a grin.
“Alright, knock it off!” Nat steps between them, pushing the crutch down with one hand and holding the other out in warning toward Shauna. “This thing is for morale, people. Don’t bring your bullshit into it.” She mostly directs it at Shauna, and Jackie revels in that.
Shauna slips into her silent-rage-face, aware that there’s no winning once Natalie has drawn the line. She rolls her eyes, huffs, and walks away.
