When Shannon died, Eddie learned the hard way that the moment someone died all your chances to make it up to them died with them, all the things you never said and the things you wish you hadn’t. It’s a bit ironic, and certainly unfair, that the missed opportunities only ever manifest in hindsight. And perhaps it’s Eddie’s fatal flaw, that he only ever sees things in retrospect.

“Bad shift,” Eddie says. It isn’t a question—Buck's home five hours early, sitting on the ground despite the fact there are chairs less than five feet away from him, and he’s got a drink in his hand. Even if Eddie didn’t know Buck intrinsically, down to his core, he’d know something was wrong.
“School bus crash,” Buck tells him. His voice is raw, tired. A little bit heartbroken. “High school baseball team on their way home from an away game.”
