“Sam. You and Bucky have been the only people winning this contest for years,” said Leila with a sigh, “You two nerds keep upping the ante and winning. We need to give other people a chance to win.”
“You don’t think that I can win if I have to partner up with someone?” asked Sam, a little offended.
“Yeah. I have a bunch of friends. I could make this work,” said Bucky defensively.
Leila looked at Sam.
Then Bucky.
Then laughed.
Cackled.
Bent over in a fit of giggles.
“Oh. Oh wow. You really think either of you could win this if you have to micromanage a partner in this competition?” she said and it was clear that she didn’t believe either of them could as she walked away from Sam and Bucky, “Good luck with that.”

EXCERPT:
“You know, there was a point during the war where Stevie transformed into a werewolf,” said the man casually as he leaned on the wall next to Sam, “A gen-u-ine lycanthrope.”
“No, he didn’t,” said Sam, half a laugh before Sam realized the man wasn’t laughing, “You’re joking.”
“This scared kid had been transformed before Stevie. Scratched him,” said the man as if he was recounting an event he had seen himself, “It went through his system, the serum destroyed lycanthropy, but for an entire week, Stevie was a werewolf.”
Sam waited.
Sam wondered if Steve had forgotten to tell Sam that he randomly turned into a werewolf for a week.
That was.
Until the man grinned.
“You had me going there,” laughed Sam as he turned to face the man, “I almost believed you.”
“The only thing more unbelievable than my story is how dreamy you look in that getup, you swell dish,” said the man gesturing at everything that was Sam.

After Sam hears that Bucky hasn't tried any candy in the future, Sam decides Bucky should taste test some.
EXCERPT:
“How long has it been since you’ve had candy?” asked Sam curiously.
“I… honestly don’t know,” said Bucky with a shrug, “The forties?”
“Should we do a taste test, then?” asked Sam as he looked for the variety packages of candy, “How many of these have you not tried since the forties? How much of these don’t have cocaine in them anymore?”
Bucky laughed.
“I think you think I’m older than I am. Coca-Cola stopped using cocaine in its products around nineteen-oh-three or something. So, I don’t think you would find it in candy after that,” said Bucky as his arm reached out in front of Sam.
Sam watched Bucky’s muscles flex in that t-shirt he was wearing, the one two sizes too small, as he grabbed one of the other variety bags.
“Too young for the great cocaine boom? How could you be? You went to school riding a pterodactyl, remember?” asked Sam as he grabbed another variety bag, “Old man.”

Like that was normal.

Just dudes being bros.
Cuddling on a giant bat-shaped beanbag chair together.
In a couple’s costume.
Watching OJ urging Emerald and Angel over to the Fry’s van like OJ was calling a horse over.
This couldn’t possibly be how friends acted.

EXCERPT:
Sam had been haunted by dreams of a place like that. As a child, as a teen; distantly as an adult, but it called less so the farther away he was from home.
A wolf playfully chasing Sam, in falcon form in those dreams, through strange streets.
The feeling had inspired Sam to test out flight magic in the first place.
He owed those dreams his aspirations.
His position as Sorcerer Supreme.
As he closed the book and organized his things, Sam found himself drawn to that feeling; those dreams he used to have.
He had to see it for himself.
If only to see it.
If only to find that wolf.
Find those intense eyes.
Or perhaps the Winter Soldier himself.
“If you’re going out, can you get me a sandwich?” asked Wong as Sam opened himself a portal to home.
To Delacroix.
“I’ll get you a po-boy,” Sam said as he left his mystical sanctuary in Harlem and found himself back home.

Sam rested his head on Bucky’s shoulder. Bucky prayed Sam couldn’t hear Bucky’s heartbeat. Sam glanced up, those tourmaline eyes dancing in the afternoon light.
“Yes, we. I’m obviously your muse. You wouldn’t have the idea without me,” proclaimed Sam, grinning wider.
“I mean, he is really old. We should probably remind him about that,” said Bucky, unable to stop his own smile.
“Aren’t you older than him? Technically?” asked Sam, chuckling.
“Shhh. We’re not talking about that,” whispered Bucky.
