Summary
The question of how vampires came to be is one that is answered by scientific hypotheses and religious doctrine alike.
Those in the former category often cite evolution, stating that vampires fill the specific niche on the food chain designed to counter the dangerous overpopulation of the most dominant species on the planet: humans.
Those in the latter category believe vampires exist as a holy punishment – either for the humans or the vampires, depending on which side of Catholicism they fall on – and subscribe to either the divine right to rule, the necessity of repentance, or both.
But regardless of what any vampire believes about their origin or reason for being, they all leave bodies in their wake. And even for those at the very top of the food chain, that sort of blood trail is bound to attract attention.

A Twilight AU that incorporates more of a "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" world, with a Bella descended from a long line of witches meant to kill vampires. How will the Cullens react when faced with a Vampire Hunter that they always thought was just part of vampire superstition?
