D’Artagnan is arrested for a string of murders and so much more that has many sickened and questioning all they know about the Gascon. His brothers and Treville truly believe he is innocent, and the King, Queen and Constance also believe but even they have doubts. The King had many doubts but not about his friend's innocence, since he had become close with D’Artagnan. But the Gascon softly instructed him to let this run its course as he didn’t want the King to interfere as if the King did it would look like Louis was letting a monster walk or had sanctioned the deaths himself. And D’Art knew that would be disastrous for the Monarchy.
When he is sentenced to death, he knows he must do something drastic. He has his secrets and knows he’ll have to use them to his advantage. So, he escapes and makes his way to the only home he really had ever know outside the Musketeers. The Court of Miracles. His former home. Well not quite former as he always remained in contact with them. He jumps into his former life as the ‘Shadow of Miracles’ and he must find a way to clear his name.
