What if, in this AU Kidlock story, John Hamish Watson had met William Sherlock Scott Holmes and James Mycroft Ambrose Holmes, and their parents, when John and Sherlock were just children? In fact, suppose that Sherlock and Mycroft’s parents had decided to take John in as a foster child and then to adopt him, when they learned about his family situation? What if Mycroft and Sherlock had become John’s adoptive brothers? This AU Kidlock story shows how that could have come about. (I've borrowed the rest of Mycroft's full name from sgam76's own head canon with sgam76's permission—thanks, sgam76! Sherlock's own full name is, needless to say, canon-compliant, as is John's.)

Inspired by the BBC TV series 'Sherlock' and the exquisite ‘for all that bitter delights will sour’ by fanfic author Darcy Lindbergh.
This is a partial retelling of her story, branching off halfway at a moment when another path might have been taken. I've tried to write it in a manner that stands alone but avoids excessive repetition.
The referenced/implied SA and domestic violence does not refer to John and Sherlock's relationship, although theirs at the start has been (unintentionally) mildly emotionally abusive and involved imperfect consent. They're both very much good ones and soft boys at heart!
This contains brief mention of Mary as a villain and no Watson baby, following the vibes of Lindbergh's original.
My story does include a lot of upsetting ideas, so please heed the tags. Feel free to message me on Tumblr or Twitter if you'd like more info.

Summary
One ritual killing starts a new stage in a Uni student, John Hamish Watson.
His only parent is the victim of what appears to be a ritual, with just a bare minimum of physical evidence. This only leaves John determined to find out who would harm his mother- who else would allow him to help- Sherlock Holmes: a safe place to stay and a chance to see another side of London streets.
Not only will he learn about the darker side of London, but John and Sherlock will find they need each other—a need that Sherlock never thought he felt; John will see someone he feels safe with outside his family.
