Summary
Steve ends his time in the army and moves back to his smalltown hometown in the fall. As he starts to settle into civilian life, his friends help, including setting him up with the perfect match - firefighter James! The two men talk and text, as duty calls and combined with the end of year business, it's hard to get a date scheduled. James sounds like quite the catch, but Steve won't know if he looks like a catch too as they don't discuss swapping pictures. But Steve also starts to have run-ins with this other guy, Bucky, who's always so grumpy when Steve interacts with him...though Steve starts to see a new side to Bucky, from a distance, and, well, the guy might not be that bad. Steve never mentions Bucky to anyone, so he has no reason to think that they may just be one and the same...

It really, truly, genuinely has been a long-ass day. Tony’s good at board meetings and show ponying like his life depends on it, but—as everyone but especially Pepper knows—he would literally rather be doing anything else with his time.
Unfortunately, some things are serious and pressing enough to need his attention, namely because they have to do with the company’s image. Seeing as Tony is the company’s image, involvement simply makes sense.
Eight hours of meetings, hour one being the resolution that they absolutely need a good lawyer to take point on their ADA compliance and unfortunate lack thereof in many spaces, and yet no lawyers had shown up, nor had anyone even given Tony a name so he could run one of his own private background checks.
He had called for everyone to break for ten, that way he can drink coffee and contemplate his life choices before he’s dragged back into the thick of everything else, too.

Matt chirps at him.

Pain is a funny craving. To Wade Wilson, it’s even funnier, and objectively much more than a craving.
It isn’t unheard of for your any average person to have a little thing for pain. Everybody needs a vice in this cold world. Biting the forbidden fruit, really, is usually all that it is. Tiny bits at a time, in moderation, then you stop. You have to stop. Average people have limits.
Wade, though, is completely limitless... and pain is his only historical constant.
Friends leave. Lovers leave. Pain, in all of its ugly glory, finds a way not only to remain, but persist. It’s comfortable to him, if for no other reason than its familiarity. No matter who or what fails Wade, pain will persevere. Always.
Over the long and aching years, he’s learned to depend on that. It’s the one thing that will always be there for him. This has been proven, again and again.
OR
Logan goes soft on Wade after he learns he’s in constant (real) pain. In his defense, fighting feels different!
Wade still wants to play dirty. He’s not made of glass. He’ll do just about anything to get his sparring partner back.

The past doesn’t leave much room for sentimentality, but if it did, Bucky would’ve been better off raising a middle finger to Hydra. They didn’t just piece him back together after they found him—no. They scooped him out of the discarded trash that was post-army cannon fodder, carved out the good bits, and filled the rest with something Bucky struggled to recognize in the mirror for far too long. Gutted him and remade him in their image, metal arm and all. And now, sure, he’s ‘free’ to make his own choices, but—
He still kills.
There’s something about the way he moves that pulls on Bucky, no matter how much he tries to shrug it off. Not graceful—effortless; makes everyone else look clumsy, Bucky probably included.

There are stars over the lake Baikal, so they throw caution to the wind and go on a trip towards the ends of the Russian winter.

Sometimes, late at night, he wondered how he’d gotten to this point, deep in debt and sleeping in alleys. He’d had a plan. College paid through Army R.O.T.C., a couple of tours of duty where he’d save as much as he could, grad school in history or poli sci, maybe a Ph.D., become a college professor, and write books about military history. When the brass came to recruit him into special ops, he shifted a little, added another four years after the training, but he knew what he wanted for his future.
But then Paraguay happened ...
A story about PTSD, government conspiracies, bureaucratic red tape, and a really smart dog who brings people together.
