He yawns as he inspects a berry, looks good to eat, so he plops it in his mouth, laughing at the lecture he knows that Puffy would give him if she saw how he got his berries. The ones he sells, he does wash, but what was the point in washing them if his hybrid side allowed him to eat them raw?
He will admit though, washing them before baking them into a pie did make the pie taste better. There’s the rustling of a bush behind him and Wilbur realizes that he forgot his axe that he’d had since he was ten. “Who goes there?” He asks, standing and turning around to face the bush.
Someone steps out and Wilbur stops. The other kid, a boy with white hair that hangs around his shoulder and broad antlers stretching from the top of his head to the width of his shoulders, looks at Wilbur with brown eyes.
“Who are you?”

He'd sworn up and down that he'd never volunteer, never do that to his brothers, never ever speak up at the reaping. The ring on his middle finger was a permanent reminder of his promise. He had barely taken it off since his mother had pressed it into his palm the day he became an orphan. He hadn't even realized it was on the wrong finger until days later.
