That voice again, muffled and worlds away from his grasp. He doesn’t hear the door to his bedroom creak ever so slowly open, doesn’t hear the hasty steps muted by the carpet. Doesn’t register the shape of a familiar silhouette opening the sliding closet doors as light hits his eyes.
The blood keeps dripping.

"Taskhand, thank you for joining me." Deirta said, addressing Verin by his formal title. Verin had suspected this would be the case, as she only ever called Essek by his title now as well. It was unlikely that she would ever address either of them by their first names, unless she was introducing them to someone, ever again. They were nothing more than artifacts to be displayed when the correct moment presented itself.
Verin bowed politely. "Umavi Thelyss. Were is Essek?" He inquired, taking his seat at the table.
"The Shadowhand will not be joining us this night. He met with an unfortunate circumstance while on the way to the Bastion this morning."

Verin had frozen this morning at breakfast, his stunning indigo eyes suddenly filling with tears. Nyl had feared that it had something to do with his boyfriend's brother the instant the Sending message had come in. Nyl reached out, resting his hand atop Verin's gently. "Are you alright? What's happened?"
Verin closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, likely to steel himself for the words he now needed to say.
"Thank you for informing me, Caleb. I-" Verin's breath hitched as he tried to keep himself from crying. "I can't imagine how hard that must have been for you."
After he had replied to Caleb's message, Verin turned his attention to Nyl. "Essek was killed this morning. Someone from the Assembly. Caleb sounded- wrecked."

With a drow around, they were significantly safer. Especially when that drow was the Shadowhand. However, the group they travelled with usually kept them safe, so there wasn't too much reason for him to worry. Except for when they were alone, as Caleb often was. Little did Essek know, his worst fears would eventually become reality.
