Thorin sighs and his hand finally pulls away from Bilbo’s hair.Bilbo stares at his face and only just manages not to whine at the loss of warmth. (“It was the injury talking. Not me” he tells himself) close. Too close.
Then the words register and the hobbit sputters because how dare Thorin act as if Bilbo was being unreasonable.
“You left me.” The face Thorin makes is almost effective enough to make Bilbo cower.
“You left, Bilbo. In the dead of night. For food.”
“I was hungry.” Bilbo does what he never thought he’d be able to without thinking of his father’s disappointed eyebrow— he grumbles.
“I would’ve come if you had asked.” Thorin answers gruffly. This time he actually sounds offended. Thorin Oakenshield. Offended because Bilbo did not allow him to partake in a side quest for midnight snacks.

Thorin, Fíli and Kíli didn’t die, but it was close. Very close. So close that they still haven’t woken up and Óin can’t tell whether (or if) they will.
The Company, with Bilbo having been injured and out of it for almost a week by now, will not hear of him leaving until winter passes at the very least, and he has to concede (not without a great amount or arguing and grumbling) when he goes to take a step out and is met with a gust of wind that almost bowls him over, one that brings the scent of snow and winter with it.
Not long after he’s being introduced to Dáin, and learns that nothing is being done to retrieve the bodies (allies or otherwise) from the battlegrounds, nothing to start the rebuilding of the mountain, the men and elves are still in Dale, Óin is the only healer they have to care for the injured dwarrow, and there’s not a single sliver of organisation.
He will not have that.
He didn’t just risk his hide for a mountain just so that his work will be lost to laziness.
What else can he do then but to take on the mantle of Regent with The Company backing him?

Summary
The Company of Thorin Oakenshield continues their perilous journey eastward, accompanied by El’úvian, an elf whose fate is now bound to theirs. Having left the safety of Beorn’s hall, they venture into the dark and treacherous depths of Mirkwood. The forest tests their endurance with illusions, hunger, and despair, until they are captured by the Woodland Elves and brought before their king, Thranduil. Tensions rise between Thorin and the Elvenking, while El’úvian herself struggles with the weight of being among her kin yet not truly belonging, her sharp exchanges with Thranduil leaving their bond strained.
Through wit and daring, the Company escapes in barrels down the Forest River, finally reaching the Lake-town of Esgaroth. Though weary, they are welcomed by the townsfolk, who place their hopes in Thorin’s quest to reclaim Erebor. It is here that El’úvian’s presence grows more vital, as she tends to the wounded and lends quiet strength to the weary travelers. But the shadow of the dragon still looms, and the journey to the Lonely Mountain is far from over.

It wasn’t really clear where or how it started, but there must have been one for everyone present to understand the reality of something doing the sighing. My first venture into Tolkien fan-fiction, and I have no idea what this is about currently. If you've read any of my other work, think that, but even less sure what's going to happen! There are likely to be edits as this develops, sometimes substantial ones. I'm also doing a crash course in Tolkien lore; I wrote my dissertation on his work, but that was many years ago, and I've only just reread the Hobbit. Not going to lie, it was watching 'The Rings of Power' that made me revisit the books, and I'm not particularly a fan of the TV series. Loved Peter Jackson's films though, I sobbed all the way through the opening scenes of Fellowship, just because I felt like I was actually in Middle-earth.
Anyway, let's see how this goes ...
