“It would be far kinder,” Claude had whispered against his ear, “to die in bliss than to live in agony.”
A curious look had flickered upon Trousseau’s face. He held the Book of Night in his hands as if it had always belonged. “I could have saved her?” he asked after. His eyes looked to Claude, desperate for confirmation, for any answer.

Maybe he would have preferred not to do all of this by himself; it reminded him of his days back in Winterbloom, trying to treat Yorna to the best of his knowledge, with no one by his side but his ill sister, and knowing that he was her only hope.
Trousseau shook his head, as though it would help let those memories fade. There was no point in thinking about this, when there was nothing he could do about it. He’d leave his colleagues to treat the symptoms of this decaying world.
He, in the meanwhile, would focus on the disease.
