"Zuko's birthday!" Aang called out. "Zuko, you didn't tell us it was your birthday? We would've celebrated!"
"It doesn't matter," Zuko said, his voice commanding, if not a bit squeaky. "I've never really celebrated my birthday, so it's not like I'm missing anything. Please, just pretend that this is a normal day."
Hopefully, they would forget all about his birthday.
… Hopefully.
Or;
The Gaang find an old calendar among the mountain of memorabilia that Zuko is burning at the Ember Island holiday house and make a startling discovery.
Zuko, on the other hand, begins to believe they are hatching a plot to kill him.

How could he ever have thought that going back to a family that thrived off of war and killed children without regret and had no issues against burning their own relatives would ever go back to being a happy, complete, safe family?
"Why would you want to burn these things?" Sokka squawked, rushing out of the house and towards the courtyard where Zuko stood with a pile of portraits and other such memorabilia that might have reminded him too much of his family, and in front of him was a large fire that only grew with each toss of a once beloved image. "Guys, help! Zuko's gone crazy."
Zuko scowled. "I'm not crazy," he said as he tossed in another portrait of Ozai, this one almost lifesize. Really, there was no need to have at least a dozen lifesize portraits of oneself in a holiday house. "If I'm living in this spirits-forsaken house for the next three weeks, then…" He floundered, attempting to find some excuse for his behaviour that wasn't rooted in self-deprecation and an obsessive fear of his family.
The others laughed at her comment, and Zuko felt a rising indignation and anger burn through his stomach and exit via the raging fire in front of him. The flames grew higher and higher, and a heat spread around the courtyard.
Before, this act would've been met with a swift retaliation by the others, the flames being extinguished before he could even blink, and then he would have to defend against an onslaught of an attack carried out by a team that had experience taking him down. Before, this would've caused fear and anger amongst those near him, sowing seeds of distrust and resentment, and whispers of "we can't trust him". Before, it would've sent him into a spiral of self-hatred and pessimism and he would go to sleep that night and wake up the next morning with nightmares.
Now, it only made his companions - his… his friends? - laugh harder. "This is Zuko's therapy," Aang giggled through his hand.
"Zuko's going to therapy now?" Another voice joined them. Katara was the last to exit the house, a smirk across her face and sauce staining her blue Water Tribe robes. "Finally. This would've been useful, oh I don't know, maybe a decade ago?"
Zuko shrugged. "My birthday was never really worth celebrating."
"Why not?" Toph asked, sounding painfully young.
His mouth ran dry. "I- it's complicated," he said, instead of the full truth, knowing Toph would be able to pick up on it. He was always a bad liar. "It's Fire Nation culture… things."
"Yeah, but," Katara stepped forward, her face turned into a soft, sad smile. It reminded him painfully of his mother. "It's still your birthday. Surely, they can't be that heartless…?" she paused and then turned back to Sokka and the calendar in his hand with the painting of Zuko and the dragon.
This was a family who systematically wiped out an entire species for fun, and then draped a caricature of that animal across their prince's shoulders for decoration on a stupid holiday calendar.

Summary
Zuko felt his face scrunch as he looked into the fire, red and orange flames licking the air. “They don’t really consider banished insurgents as next in line to the throne.”
“They’re wrong,” Chit Sang snapped, and the fire flared brighter for a moment.
“Are they?” Zuko chuckled humorlessly. He could feel the shape of the hand cupping his face, feel the weight of the shame of his branding. “You need some kind of honor to be—“
“You have more than all of them combined,” Chit Sang interrupted him, with enough vitriol to have Zuko snapping his head up to look at him. “You, over the snake on the throne and the viper at his feet. You, Prince Zuko—“
He cut himself off abruptly, scrubbing a hand over his brow.

Summary
Zuko doesn’t know exactly how he got here.
But when a Spirit grabs you by the arm, dances a waltz with you, reveals your past and future to the Avatar, and shows you getting shot with lightning, you don't ask questions. You just get on the flying bison and embrace a new destiny in an attempt to save yourself and your estranged sister from the monster haunting your home.
Especially when there are only two known lightningbenders left in the world, and the Spirit revealed that both of them are traitors waiting for their chance to strike.
Or: the author has let the Epic brainworms get to them, and Zuko is the one who has to deal with it.
Featuring: Zuko trading his non-existent impulse control for some new friends, an over-protective Gaang who is very okay with that decision, a baffled Azula who isn't exactly going to say no to the older brother that wants to clear a path for her to take the throne, and a confused Iroh who just wants to know what he did to get slotted into the same category as Ozai.

Summary
“Shitty author, shitty novel! Prince Zuko deserves justice!” Aang’s famous last words as he took his last breath.
…Forced to read his favorite character’s unjust death and being killed after. Aang had had enough when he was yeeted into the same novel he died cursing because an annoying entity called ‘The System’ thought it would be fun transmigrating him into the most annoying novel he had the misfortune of reading.
To make things worse, Aang didn’t become an anonymous NPC, so he could help his favorite character from the sidelines. Instead, he became that damned Protagonist who will end up killing the Scum Villain, Prince Zuko!
……You know what? Let the world burn and the plot go up in flames! Aang was going to give Prince Zuko the happy ending he deserved, one way or another, even if it killed him!

Summary
Azula's eyes are clear and curious and pure. This child doesn’t have to turn into broken, unhinged teenager ready to strike down her own brother with lightning. She doesn’t have to grow up thinking herself unlovable.
"Let’s have each other's backs," she says, looking right into Azula's innocent eyes. "Always."
_______________
Or, a random woman dies and is reborn as Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. She’s not happy about it, but no one’s asking for her opinion. So here she is, trying to figure out how to use her vague memories of the show to survive until Aang’s return, while also attempting to (manipulate) guide her affection-starved little sister toward a redemption arc. Gotta take that silver sandwich bite!

The thought came unbidden, sharp and unwelcome. Zuko froze, his mind immediately rejecting it. No . He chided himself, forcing the insane notion away. It was just another way his mind was trying to drive him into greater peril. He still had his inner flame; he could still feel the sun. He was a firebender.
Zuko must now face the trials that come with being alive as well as tackling the most important question; Why is he alive?
[Or, What does one do after being saved by a spirit?]
Recommend reading the previous ones to understand this.

Summary
"Are you..." Zuko rasps out and the man instantly snaps his mouth shut - finally stopping his hysteric rambling with it. He must be surprised that Zuko is coherent enough to say anything at all and he leans forward to fully capture the rest of Zuko's slurred words. "... trying to hit on me while I'm bleeding out on your carpet?"
The man gives him a bewildered look. "... I have hardwood floors. That's a towel."
___Or: Zuko tries to find ways to deal with his fucked up life - like knitting, smoking, being an asshole in general, moonlighting as a vigilante - you know, regular stuff - he just never accounted for meeting Sokka.

Summary
As with most things in life, hindsight is the only clarity humans can get. Lieutenant Jee has more experience in this than he’d like.
Prince Zuko was a trial from Angi to either prove Jee a decent man, or drive him utterly insane.
It’s a pity that clarity doesn’t come when you need it, only ever when it’s all too late.
