    Summary

“What happened to you?” Jiang Cheng demands.

Wei Wuxian sighs. “I already said I don’t know. This conversation is so boring,” he says. “I’m hungry. Can’t we get some food? They’re all too dead,” he adds, flicking a hand at the dead Wen guards, “to be tasty.”

    and

Then there’s a sound like someone hacking something up and Wei Ying comes back into the room and, with a very proud expression drops a handful of teeth on the map table. Human teeth. They’re bloody and… wet…

“What?” Jiang Cheng asks. “What’s this?”

“Wen Chao’s teeth!” Wei Ying says proudly.

    and

Lan Wangji wants to hold him tight in his arms and cry. He wants to eat him out. He wants to perform an exorcism.

    1. “Lan Zhan!” he exclaims[. . .]flinging his arms around the other boy[. . .]

“What the hell do you think you’re doing? Stop assaulting Lan-er-gongzi.”

But, remarkably, one of Lan Zhan’s arms[. . .]wraps around Wei Wuxian’s back and Lan Zhan says, into Wei Wuxian’s hair, “Not an assault.”

There's a hitch in his voice and Wei Wuxian pulls back[. . .]to see Lan Zhan’s face, to see Lan Zhan’s soft eyes and parted lips and tiny smile.

“Wei Ying, you’re alive,” Lan Zhan says, like it’s the most wonderful thing he’s ever heard, like it’s a fucking miracle, and his arm is still around Wei Wuxian, and Wei Wuxian can’t help it, he really can’t. He closes the few inches between them and presses his lips against Lan Zhan’s.

    2. “I don’t have a golden core,” Wei Wuxian says, casually.

“Wei Ying!” Lan Zhan exclaims, staring up at Wei Wuxian[. . .]

“Oh, don’t worry about it[. . .]I don’t need it anymore![. . .]I can fight perfectly well without it. Look,” he says and slashes his hand at a stone bench on the other side of the courtyard. The bench breaks in half cleanly and then collapses[. . .]“I’m much stronger than any cultivator now.”

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says softly, slowly, standing up.

Again Wei Wuxian is struck by his incredible beauty, the way all his breath seems sucked out of him when he sees him.

    3. “What happened to you?” Lan Zhan asks.

Wei Wuxian opens his mouth, but nothing comes out. He shakes his head. For a moment there are brief flashes; teeth, hunger, terrible pain[. . .]

“I don’t know!” Wei Wuxian laughs.

“You were supposed to meet me in Yiling[. . .]After…” he blanches. “Wei Wuxian!”

“Jiang Cheng!” Wei Wuxian exclaims back. “See- I know your name too!”

“Where. Did. My. Golden. Core. Come. From?” Jiang Cheng asks, his voice surprisingly quiet.

Wei Wuxian laughs again. “I guess maybe you’re not so stupid?[. . .]It’s mine, of course. I’ve got the scars to prove it.” He begins to undo his belt, but Lan Zhan grabs his wrist.

Wei Wuxian pouts at him. “You don’t want to see?[. . .]But I’m so pretty, Lan Zhan[. . .]Don’t you want to see how pretty I am?”

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan chokes out[. . .]

“Jiang Cheng[. . .]You’re still on about that?[. . .]I didn’t need it as much as you did, I owed your family a debt, I lied to you about Baoshan Sanren[. . .]Wen Qing here did the core transfer, you got a golden core, I was captured by Wen Chao....”

    4. “Love is so easy. I had no idea. I thought it was hard and embarrassing and awkward and…” He smiles. “I’m such an idiot. Will you forgive me?”

Lan Zhan releases his wrist, steps back, all sorts of emotions chasing across his face.

“What happened to you?” Jiang Cheng demands.

Wei Wuxian sighs. “I already said I don’t know[. . .]I’m hungry. Can’t we get some food? They’re all too dead[. . .]to be tasty.”

    “What?!” Jiang Cheng exclaims, horrified.

Wei Wuxian turns to see equally horrified looks on Wen Qing and Lan Zhan’s faces. “What?” he asks.

    5. “Lan-er-gege,” Wei Ying whispers in Lan Wangji’s ear. “You’re such a strong cultivator. I can feel how enormous your golden core is. How powerful. How vibrant[. . .]I want to drink it down.”

[. . .]there was clearly something very wrong with Wei Ying. The casual way he’d mentioned giving his core to Jiang Wanyin, the way he had… joked?... about eating dead bodies, the way he kept going blank and then shaking his head, as if chasing away memories.

And yet, and yet, he’d kissed him. Wei Ying had just bounced up to him and smiled the most wonderful smile and he’d hugged Lan Wangji and then he’d kissed Lan Wangji and he’d looked at Lan Wangji and had said: “Love is so easy.”

    6. When they’re done[. . .]they wrap around each other, Wei Ying idly stroking Lan Wangji’s cheek and Lan Wangji lying pressed against Wei Ying’s chest. Wei Ying, of course, has no heartbeat.

    7. “Then trust me[. . .]I will go and speak privately with my brother and he will not harm me.”

“You’ll come back,” Wei Ying says. “If you do not I will go to Gusu and tear it down. If you are dead the rules will no longer apply. I will eat the world in revenge for you.”

    8. “He says he would eat the world in revenge for me. You should ask yourself what I would do for him.”

“What would you do for him?” Brother asks.

Lan Wangji reaches behind his head and unties his hair ribbon[. . .]

He holds it out to his brother. “Your choice,” he says. “Keep me or not. I will marry him.”

    9. Brother surprises him by[. . .]coming around the table and kneeling in front of him.

“Didi,” he says, taking the ribbon from his hand and wrapping it back around his forehead[. . .]“You should ask yourself what I would do for you.”

“What would you do for me?” Lan Wangji asks.

Brother smiles softly. “Trust you[. . .]Even if you want to marry a demon.”
