And the problem with breaking rules was that once you started, it was difficult to stop, especially when you didn’t face any immediate consequences. Almost like maybe the rules didn’t matter to begin with. Like maybe it was okay, just this once, and then when it was okay - when it turned out nothing bad happened whatsoever - then maybe it was okay a second time. And a third. Maybe that specific rule didn’t actually apply to you at all.
And maybe the next one didn’t either.
The rules were as follows:
#1. No kissing
#2. No cuddling
#3. No feelings
#4. No jealousy
#5. No promisesEasy enough to follow.
Until they weren’t.

There’s a knock at the door but it opens before Stiles can even get up from the table and Peter swaggers in. Chris follows with an apologetic look. “I’m trying to teach him manners.”
“Lost cause,” says Stiles.
“Excuse me, my manners are exquisite,” says Peter, acting affronted.
“No, your manners are subjective,” returns Stiles.
Chris looks over at John. “Sheriff. How are you doing with all this new information?”
“It’s a lot to take in,” he admits.
Peter rolls his eyes. “You would be one of those people who needs proof. Look, werewolf.” He shifts his face and then shifts back. “Human.” Peter shifts again. “Werewolf. Human.” Then he sticks his hands in front of his face to show the claws, moves them to reveal the werewolf face, moves them back and removes the claws, moves his hands again to a normal face.
John glares at him. “I said it was a lot to process, not that I wanted to be the baby on the end of the creepiest fucking game of peek-a-boo.”
Stiles doesn’t even try to stop his laughter.
Peter pets Stiles’ head. “There, there. Serious faces.”
Stiles attempts to shake Peter off but it’s kind of impossible when he’s still laughing.

The Alphas look at him like he’s not a threat at all. Daring, yes. But a genuine threat? No.That’s the problem. Stiles talks and laughs and jokes around so much that people don’t see what lurks underneath the surface. There’s still a kid who can’t let go of the idea that if he’d just fought harder, his mom would still be alive. And in the last year, he’s had far too many people try to beat him into submission. Try to defeat him.
But for all the jokes, Stiles isn’t the good guy in the story. Scott’s one of the good guys. Isaac too. The ones who still struggle to take things all the way to the killing point because they still believe the bad guy can be redeemed.
There’s a reason Stiles never hesitated between pulling up to the Hale house and throwing the Molotov cocktail at Peter. It’s the same reason Allison didn’t think twice about shooting the arrow so it would explode.
Death is a part of them. A darker part that probably shouldn’t be tapped into but exists all the same. It makes them deadly and dangerous.
The idea makes him think of Giles and the way he took care of the human that Buffy couldn’t.
Stiles considers that comparison for a moment as he stands, ignoring the Alphas as they glare at him. He could easily be assumed to be the Willow of the group, with his penchant for research. Or the Xander with the jokes. But he’s not going to go evil like the first and he doesn’t have the naivete of the other. He is the Giles. Unassuming, smart, there for advice. But push him to a breaking point and he doesn’t break or snap or fall apart.
Push him far enough and it’s like the wall keeping the killer at bay moves aside just for a moment. Just long enough to remind people that appearances can be misleading.
