Estelle uncurls and fixes you with a Look, twice as powerful as yours, two star-bright eyes burning into you, suspicious of where this is going. You never could beat yourself in a staring contest, even before the accident.
You look away instead, grip your dagger, hold it up to the sunlight. Your reflection stares back at you. Tired. Always tired. It’s getting harder and harder to pretend that you’re not.

Summary
When you die and then wake up, over and over and over and over and over and over again, there’s always a weight on your chest. It’s harder to breathe in and out for those first few moments, and yet that’s a comfort after the terrifying half-asleep numbness where you can’t feel anything at all. Just you floating in a blank void, cold, alone, the other part of you dissolved into dust because you’d forgotten about the stupid boulder or slipped on a banana peel like the doomed clown that you are or been killed by the king again.
And then you wake, and struggle to breathe, and open your eye to find your other two eyes staring back at you. Your daemon, curled up on your chest, real and alive, and so you must be alive, too, even when you feel like you’re not.
The first time you ever remember waking up -- back before loops and Vaugarde and your friends but after something devastatingly big that your brain could no longer understand, back when you-both-of-you still had four eyes and no names -- you’d stared at each other too, lost, confused, and sure of only one thing: that you belonged to each other.
