Sometimes Buck can pretend Eddie is there just by sitting on the couch and breathing in the remnants of his cologne likely deep in the cushions, or lighting a scented candle (Eddie always gets the citrusy ones, and the spicy cinnamony ones.) (Buck doesn’t even use scented candles himself because they give him headaches but he’s been lighting them non-stop lately, because Eddie left some of them behind, and well, he doesn’t want them to go to waste.) (They don’t even smell that good. Really. You get tired of them quick. But he keeps lighting them.)

Buck’s flush deepens, before he gives Eddie an incredulous look. “You didn’t even know you were gay yet, Eds,” he says, raising an eyebrow.
“Doesn’t matter,” Eddie began, shaking his head, “It's you. I think I've loved you my entire life. I know I will for the rest of it. I didn’t even realise I liked guys, and I knew you were it. I’d love you no matter what,” it's here, that Eddie’s smile goes a bit cheeky, though the look in his eyes is no less sincere, “Buck, I’d love you even if you were a woman.”
“Yeah?” he asks, laughing slightly, eyes a little watery.
Buck, I’d love you even if you were a woman.
In which Buck reacts completely normally to an offhanded joke Eddie makes.

Summary
Eddie’s debating the risks of jumping out the window and fleeing the country when the words slip out of their own accord. She’s just as shocked as Buck is, and that’s a pretty damn high bar.
“I’m probably a woman.”
It comes out far too casually for the energy of the conversation thus far, and the sudden shift has Buck and Eddie standing stock still in surprise. No one says a word. Eddie sort of wants to die just a little bit more the longer the silence lasts.
Buck is the first to break it.
“...Probably?” He looks absolutely bewildered, like that was the last thing he expected to come out of Eddie’s mouth. In fairness, it probably was.
“Definitely,” Eddie amends quietly.
It’s like that one word was the gust of wind to knock over the house of cards. The last sandbag holding back the raging flood. The camel’s back has been obliterated, so to speak, and all it took was that one admission.
