While Vi was carrying Jinx, she occasionally looked down at her face, hoping to see something other than a blank expression. But every time, she was met with the same lifeless visage. Swallowing her emotions again, Vi held her sister’s body a little closer, a little tighter, just to remind herself that she’s still here.
Vi began humming softly to Jinx, the same song that their mother used to always hum, hoping that it could somehow soothe her, and gently brushed her thumb over her sister’s shoulder. She remembers often doing this when they were much younger, more innocent, after Powder had a nightmare and woke up screaming and crying, hitting her head and sometimes even shouting at nothing. Vi would always carefully take Powder in her arms and sing to her (but now that many years had passed since then, she can no longer remember the lyrics) and stroke her hair, hoping to get her to calm down before Vander woke up.
”No monsters will get you when I’m here.” She’d always tell her sister, before a real monster showed up and she was powerless to do anything.
