Summary
For a brief instant, Sam had thought that Bucky would be okay. That he would be fine, that this would be nothing. Bucky fell all the time: he had always hurled himself from planes like a madman during the missions they used to run together. He would be fine, right?
And then Bucky had hit the ground, and all Sam could do was watch.
When Bucky is badly injured on a mission with the so-called New Avengers, despite everything, Sam shows up.

“You didn’t have to go.” Sam sounded frustrated. “We could’ve talked it out. I was just cooling off, I wasn’t gonna stay in our room all night. I figured you just went for a walk, but then you didn’t come back.” He seemed to hesitate, and then: “You always come back.”
After fighting with Sam over the Valentina issue, Bucky winds up at the Watchtower. It helps — or, a couple of its occupants do, until Bucky manages to help himself.

“That idiot,” Sam growled out, shaking his head with vehemence. "He couldn’t have waited? Couldn’t have held off just five damn minutes for someone with the right gear? The room wasn’t going anywhere! It would’ve been fine to just wait, and now look where he is!”
“He’ll be okay, Sam,” Torres said, voice still quiet as he maneuvered the jet upwards and away. “He’s tough.”
“Whatever toxin that was was tougher,” Sam muttered, shaking his head. “He stopped breathing, Torres.”
While on a mission, Bucky takes a hit, and doesn't get back up. Sam helps him recover. (Or: shameless Bucky Barnes whump that I did way too much research into airborne poisoning and recovery for.)

Disclaimer: these stories show a healthy dynamic/relationship between Mitchell and Cameron. In the series, their relationship becomes noticeably toxic as the show progresses, particularly through Cam's victimization of himself and manipulator tactics. I do not condone Cam's behavior in any way, but I am choosing to rewrite his character in my writing so that the toxic and negative aspects of him are minimized as much as possible in order to create a healthier relationship in my stories.

Torres wakes Sam up in the middle of the night to hand over a drugged-up Bucky. Who is soft, and sleepy, and saying things that he probably wouldn't say if he were sober.

Summary
“When’s the last time someone else stitched you up?” Bucky asked. He was still speaking in that breathy, low tone, like he was afraid something might shatter if he raised his voice.
“I don’t know,” admitted Sam. “Years, probably.”
His answer seemed to physically wound Bucky. For a moment, Sam was worried he might cry. Instead, he just lifted his left hand; touched a single finger to the side of the wound. Sam shivered from the cold touch of the metal.
“Is there anything else I can do?” Bucky said, watching the way Sam’s ribcage rose and fell with each breath. The question, for some reason, made Sam want to slam his head against a wall. He’d heard it often, but in all the wrong places. Never when he needed it. And never like this.
*
Sam and Bucky have this thing between them, and it keeps getting stronger, and something is bound to break. If only either of them could bring themselves to acknowledge it.

“I can make it better,” he said.
Something crackled in Bucky’s ears.
Sam looked up at him, open and earnest. “Where does it hurt?”
“Everywhere,” said Bucky, truthfully.
“Then that’s where I’ll start,” replied Sam, and he pressed a gentle kiss to Bucky’s metal knuckles, the sensation strange and unfamiliar. Bucky wasn’t sure if he’d ever felt tenderness through that arm before. It sort of made him want to cry.
Bucky closed his eyes, attempting to will away his tears. Every press of Sam’s mouth – along his hand, his arm, his shoulder – stoked the fire within, the one he’d tried so hard to ignore.
“Buck.”
He opened his eyes. Sam was looking at him intently, face a breath away, and his expression was searching.
“Let me,” he said simply.
