His mother blinked slowly. "I never should have answered the phone."
That didn't make sense, because their phone had been ringing off the hook all week and his mother was always the one to answer.
"I knew it was going to be bad," she said softly, slowly, almost like she was talking in her sleep. "I had the most horrible feeling in my gut when the phone rang. I've felt it before—I knew what it was. I should've just let the answering machine take it. I never should have picked up."
More than two decades later, when Buck's phone starts vibrating as he's ruining the lamination of another batch of would-be croissants, he understands what his mother had meant that day.
Every atom in his body is straining toward the phone, but he can't unlock his hands from the death grip they have on the rolling pin in order to reach for it.

“Can I help you?” Tommy asked, peering up and down the street to see if, perhaps, they needed help, wondering why they'd knock on his door out of all the houses on this street.
“Are you Thomas Kinard?” the boy asked, his voice a little deeper than Tommy had anticipated.
“Tommy. Yeah.”
The two kids exchanged a look.
“I'm Benny. This is Holly. Patrick Kinard is our father.”
Tommy's hand reached out for the door frame, trying to hold his body up as his knees threatened to give out. The world around him shifted, a violent, seismic tremor that ran through his very core. For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Steve Harrington’s traveled through time before. Sort of. He doesn’t know if the Upside Down counts exactly, but it’s probably close enough. Real time travel–like that kid in the orange puffer vest and his weird scientist uncle-guy–doesn’t exist.
At least, he was pretty sure it didn’t, until Dustin insists he’s made his very own time machine to “fix Steve’s love life” and send him back in time to 1987 to do it.
Steve was gonna call the little butthead crazy, but then the weird contraption in his driveway starts buzzing and crackling—
And then Steve’s standing in front of The Hawk—“Grand Re-Opening” sign still clinging to the marquee—and hearing a voice he’s not heard in six years.
