    “Is it the Joker?” Bruce couldn’t help himself from asking, couldn’t help himself to mention the elephant in the room. The one thing that Bruce couldn’t find, couldn’t help with, the irony alone would qualify it as truth.

    But Jason’s face had twisted, he shook his head.

    “No, that wasn’t it. That would be too simple. Sure, I’m fucking angry, that bastard beat my chest in, blew me up, I want to cave his face in.” Jason paused. “But I made my peace with dying as soon as I saw that bomb, there wasn’t enough time to escape. I knew what was happening, I was prepared.”

    “Then—”

    “But I didn’t have the time to prepare for you.” He continued. “I never did. I remember now, looking at my body, I was in your arms, you were—”

    He grimaced.

    “You’re still not. . .all there. No Bruce, my unfinished business isn’t the Joker, my unfinished business is you.”

    Part of Jason keeps the count going, while the rest of him kind of just...seizes. Because he knows this canopy. He knows the the posts it's attached to. He—fuck—he knows the notch in the bottom left post he'd put in it when he'd stolen one of Bruce's batarangs when he was twelve and thrown it around like the stupid kid he'd been.

    This was Jason's room.
