Yes. That must be it. Ness was halluzinating. He had to be hallucinating the white light around Kaiser, that seemed to come out of his own body. He had to be halluzinating the 1.. 2..3.. pairs of white wings on Kaiser's back.

He traced a circle on the snow, and a second, smaller one inside it. It would have been nice to dig out his old spellbook for the occasion, but Ness didn’t want to push his luck too much. Besides, though it had been years, he still remembered the runes and their significance. He inscribed them carefully in the gap between the concentric circles until he had filled the space with the same summoning spell he had attempted when he was a child.
Now, all he needed to do was visualise the magical creature he wanted to bring to him. He was spoiled for choice, really, when there was an abundance of magical creatures he wanted to meet. Any one of them would do, he really wasn’t picky.

How the blonde haired man in front of Alexis could say something like that so easily, Alexis wasn’t sure. So, Alexis, for a second, was about to say “sure,” matching the same cool tone Kaiser had used, following suit as if this was just a normal conversation.
And, the way Kaiser had said it, it made it feel like a normal conversation, like asking someone you just met to be your ‘subject’ was completely fine and not at all weird or strange. And, from the social ostracization Alexis had received his entire life, part of him did believe that ‘subject’ was just another word for ‘friend.’ And, unfortunately, that ‘part of him’ was basically a synonym with ‘his entire being’ so he did something strange himself. He agreed.
