Summary
Buck is struggling to handle change.
Saying goodbye to the life you once took for granted is always going to be hard. A breakup is nothing new to Buck and sadly neither is knowing his sister had been kidnapped. Watching the dog he had quickly loved also leave him for his real home was a bittersweet feeling because he knew it's what needed to be done. He's been there and done that before.
But never has he had to say goodbye to a bestfriend. A bestfriend that he is fighting and failing the urge to admit he loves. Learning to be alone is hard once you've had it all... but one random day at work was going to change all of that and it may be the biggest change of them all.
If only anyone would notice him falling apart.

Summary
When nine-year-old Evan Buckley crawls through flames to save his infant brother, he expects his parents’ gratitude—not to be abandoned to foster care as a liability. Labeled “too much” by the family he risked his life to protect, Evan grows up chasing the ghost of the sibling he barely saved, his childhood reduced to a cycle of group homes and the relentless fear that fire might steal everything again. But Los Angeles’ Firehouse 118 doesn’t see a hazard in the bright-eyed probie everyone calls Buck. To Bobby Nash, he’s a son worth mentoring. To Athena Grant, a survivor worth protecting. To Eddie Diaz, a partner worth trusting—even with his own son’s heart.
As Buck rebuilds his life alongside the firefam he’s chosen, buried embers reignite when his biological brother, Daniel, uncovers the truth about their shared past. Torn between the family that cast him out and the one that refuses to let go, Buck must confront the scars he’s carried since childhood—and decide whether forgiveness can coexist with the unshakable bond he’s forged with the 118. Sometimes, the people who light our way home aren’t the ones who share our blood… but the ones who brave the fire with us.

Savior Sibling: a child conceived through selective in vitro fertilization as a potential source of donor organs or cells for an existing brother or sister with a life-threatening medical condition.
When Albert shows up on Chimney’s doorstep, Maddie tells him about her family, how they were with her versus how they were with Buck. She tells him how her parents were drowned with their grief and created a shrine to Daniel, leaving Buck to be raised in a dead brother’s shadow.

Summary
For as long as he could remember, Buck's favorite color has been blue.
The color of his bedding in his childhood bedroom was blue, complete with matching blue curtains to block out the sun that shone through his east-facing window in the mornings. He couldn’t even remember picking them out, they had been a part of him for as long as he lived in the Pennsylvania home.
Even his walls were painted a light blue complimentary of his bedding. Apparently his parents had painted it when he was little. It was one of the nicest things they had ever done for him.
The point was: blue had always been Buck’s favorite color.
So when he and Maddie were out to lunch and she offhandedly mentioned how much Daniel used to love the color blue, it absolutely floored him.
Or: Buck’s journey to find a color to call his own
Or or: A character study where Buck crashes out for 4700 words about colors

Summary
He could only stare numbly at his best friend as he laid dying in the street, his forbidden blood pooling around him like spilled ink on paper.
He could taste it in his mouth. A deep syrupy flavour, not what he thought it would be like. When he was warned against tainted blood, no one ever said how good it might taste. Even in his shocked state, Buck wanted another taste, another mouthful of the poisoned chalice.

The nurse laid the baby down on Gabriella’s chest and said, “A beautiful Baby girl.”
This was his baby. His angel. Tiny, wrinkled, small strands of light golden brown hair on her head. Her small fists bouncing around in the air with her eyes closed and spit slobbering out of her mouth.
“She’s so perfect. So beautiful. How is she real?” He said in a whisper. He couldn’t stop staring at her.
“Would you like to cut the cord, Dad?” The nurse said.
He couldn’t believe it. He was holding his baby girl.
Or, Buck has a daughter and learns what it’s like to be in love.

Summary
“You’re my kid, Buck. I’m biased, of course I think you’re easy to love.”
And there’s something in there that Buck latches onto, and it wasn’t even Bobby bluntly saying that Buck was his kid.
Of course.
Of course I think you’re easy to love.
Of course.
Naturally. As might be expected. Needless to say. Obviously. Buck hadn’t expected himself to latch onto those two words, but maybe it was because Bobby had said them. And Buck hates that he doesn’t know what to do with those words, mouth opening and closing a few times before he decides that he needs more time to just think. Think of what to say and how to say it. “Of course?” Is what he ends up saying, and Bobby looks confused for a moment, trying to understand why out of anything that he had said, that was what the younger man seemed to have grasped. But then that confusion is gone just as quick as it had appeared, instead it’s replaced with a sad understanding.

“Buck’s a great dad. I would know, he’s my dad.” Chris sounds as angry as a teenager with a heart as big as his could be, Buck throwing a look over his shoulder to look at his son, the one that he would risk his life for. Had risked his life for.

Pink took over, parading in the middle of the group with her own rifle. “All you have to do is sit still, be quiet, and don’t do anything stupid. This will be over soon.”
Blue pointed his rifle around at each person individually, ensuring they understood, before his gaze reached Buck. His grip on the rifle tightened.
“Stand up.” He ordered.

Summary
"Name?" she asked, hands ready to catch the life entering this world.
"Evan," Phillip bit out.
Ravena almost laughed. Youth. So predictable.
"Magic?"
"Healing," they answered in unison.
Ravena hesitated. A foolish idea took root. The child was strong. Late. Capable of holding more. Why not? The Buckleys barely understood the process. They knew enough to seek her out, to make their shady deals, but not enough to comprehend what she truly did. They would never know.
She wove both gifts into the infant’s fragile form—healing and protection. Twice the power. Twice the burden. Twice the suffering.
For the next five years, Daniel thrived, his sickness fading into nothing.
For the next five years, Evan withered.

The pain that clawed at his chest was enough for him to wish on hopeless prayers, the weight on his body the only thing he clung to.
Every breath felt like it could be his last.
If he could still feel the pain in his legs and chest, it meant he still had a chance.
A chance to survive.
A chance to hold his children again. To kiss Eddie. To come home.Or the one where Buck gets hurt and their lives change forever.

Adriana shook her head, determination flashing in her eyes. “You’re drunk, you’re crying, and you came home looking like someone just ripped your heart out. Don’t tell me nothing is wrong!”
Eddie laughed bitterly, wiping at his face with the sleeve of his hoodie. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“Then help me understand!” she snapped.

Summary
He can still feel the collar of the itchy green sweater on his neck, closing in as the walls of his loft seemed to bend and sway with the smiles of the elder Buckley’s as they looked at him from across the kitchen counter - Daniel standing right beside him. He’s still expecting he should be in the loft, practically waiting for a bruised and battered Maddie to barge down the bedroom door in front of him but his fear-stricken brain knows how he can fix this.
Shaking fingers open his phone screen and tap through his contacts until he reaches a very familiar one and hits the call button.
He brings it up to his ear and it rings once, then twice, then-“Buck?”
It’s not Bobby.

“Time of death is… 11:34 PM,” the person said, their voice crisp and emotionless, like they were reading off a report.
"Oooh. I get it now,” Buck said, almost a bit too cheerfully considering what was going on. “You’re like a grim reaper!”
Or, Buck makes an impulsive decision to end his life. The universe has other plans for him.
